What to Expect
From your first visit at Nemours Children's, you'll have an entire team walking beside you. While every child's care plan is different, understanding common treatments can help your family feel more prepared. We're here to guide you through each step, answer your questions, and provide the support you need.
Blood Transfusions
What it Is:
A procedure that provides healthy blood cells when your child's body isn't making enough.
How it Works:
We carefully match donated blood to your child's blood type and deliver it intravenously (through an IV line) while monitoring closely.
What to Expect:
Sessions can last 2-4 hours. Some children need regular transfusions while others may only need them occasionally.
Learn more about blood transfusions
from Nemours KidsHealth
®
.
Red Blood Cell Exchange (Erythrocytopheresis)
What it Is:
A specialized treatment that removes abnormal red blood cells and replaces them with healthy ones.
How it Works:
Using a special machine, we separate and remove affected blood cells while returning healthy cells to the body.
What to Expect:
Treatment sessions are typically done in our infusion center and can last several hours.
Stem Cell (Bone Marrow) Transplant
What it Is:
A treatment that replaces damaged bone marrow with healthy stem cells to treat certain blood disorders.
Types of transplants:
Using your child's own cells
Using cells from a matched donor
Using donated umbilical cord blood
What to Expect:
A treatment that replaces damaged bone marrow with healthy stem cells to treat certain blood disorders.

stem cell transplant care
at Nemours.
Learn more about stem cell transplants
from Nemours KidsHealth.
Disease-Modifying Therapies
What it Is:
Advanced medications that treat the underlying cause of blood disorders.
How it Works:
Different medications work in various ways. Some prevent sickling of red blood cells, others boost blood cell production or modify how the body produces certain proteins.
What to Expect:
May be given as regular infusions, daily medications, or periodic treatments depending on the specific therapy.
Iron Chelation Therapy
What it Is:
Treatment to remove excess iron from the body that can build up from regular blood transfusions.
How it Works:
Medication given either through an infusion or by mouth that binds to excess iron so the body can remove it.
What to Expect:
Regular monitoring of iron levels and ongoing adjustments to therapy as needed.
Gene Therapy
What it Is:
Cutting-edge treatment that targets the genetic causes of certain blood disorders.
How it Works:
Uses modified viruses or other techniques to deliver corrected genes or modify existing ones.
What to Expect:
Currently available for select conditions through clinical trials and approved treatments. Requires careful evaluation and monitoring.
