MESSAGE
The University of Yangon, founded in 1920, is the earliest university in Myanmar and has played an important role in the life of the nation through educating future leaders and undertaking ground-breaking research. Today the University is going through a process of revitalization that will create a flagship university for the future development of the country.
With twenty-one departments from Anthropology to Zoology the University of Yangon covers all the major subjects in arts and sciences as well as Law. Research is becoming increasingly focused on applying academic disciplines to the challenges facing development in Myanmar. In recent years the University has established new links with leading universities in the ASEAN region, Asia more widely, and Europe and North America in order to broaden and intensify its research outputs and build its international profile.
Teaching at the University is also undergoing a major modernization programme. All students are encouraged to become “autonomous learners”. This means teaching at University of Yangon is structured to encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning. Students are encouraged to embark successfully on their academic journey that will define their career in the years ahead. They are encouraged to look more broadly at their set of skills and understand the importance of continuing to develop their skills beyond university. Graduates of the University of Yangon will not only be highly employable but also intellectually entrepreneurial to benefit themselves, their colleagues and the community more widely.
