Lower School: Grades K-4
At Hackley Lower School, we combine a commitment to academic growth with a deep focus on character education.
We embrace Hackley’s core value

Character is higher than intellect,

striving to ensure each student understands the importance of being an upstanding citizen.
Our program encourages students to value both their individual contributions and those of others, fostering an appreciation for diversity as they explore similarities and differences within their peers, the School and the world. Each day, students are challenged academically, physically and socio-emotionally to make thoughtful choices and try new things, learning more about themselves as students and as people.
Preparing Students for Success
Our Lower School program provides young learners with the foundational skills they need to succeed in the years ahead, while also teaching them
how
to be a student. Students engage in a robust, multifaceted curriculum that includes core subjects like literacy, social studies, science and math. Alongside these, they explore a rich array of special subjects, including the arts, technology, physical education and character education. In addition to building strong academic skills, students develop vital organizational, executive functioning and study habits that will serve them well throughout their educational journey.

Distinctive Experiences and Methods
Everything we do in the Lower School is grounded in our character education program. From the first day of school, students learn the importance of friendship, empathy and other core values that guide their growth. These values come to life through a variety of interdisciplinary projects and experiences, such as:
Year-long garden curriculum in the Lower School garden.
Grade-wide performances (e.g., Flat Stanley for first grade, Character Matters for second grade, Spanish Cultural Celebration for third grade, Americana for fourth grade).
Lower School Art Show.
“Trip Around the World” cultural exploration.
Special assemblies that highlight our diverse community.
After-school offerings that support personal growth and creativity.
These distinctive opportunities allow students to put their character education into practice while deepening their academic and creative skills.
A Community Where Every Child is Valued
What excites students most about Hackley Lower School is the sense of belonging and individuality they experience. Small class sizes and a low student-to-teacher ratio ensure that each child is seen, known and supported in ways that are both personalized and meaningful. Our teachers are dedicated to partnering with families, providing ongoing feedback on each student's development. At Hackley Lower School, we embrace the philosophy that every child is a unique part of our community, and when you join Hackley, you become a part of our extended family.
