HM Inspectorate of Probation has a vision to support the delivery of high-quality probation and youth justice services that change people’s lives for the better.
This is embedded in legislation:
For adult services
– Section 7 of the
Criminal Justice and Court Services Act (2000)
, as amended by the
Offender Management Act (2007)
, section 12(3)(a).
For youth services
– inspection and reporting on youth justice teams is established under section 39 of the
Crime and Disorder Act (1998)
.
We do this through independent inspections, recommendations, research and effective practice guidance.
As well as inspections of individual and regional services, we publish regular thematic reports on key issues in the criminal justice system, conduct Serious Further Offence reviews and produce annual reports each year.
Please note: HM Inspectorate of Probation’s role is to inspect and report on the quality of probation services. We have no role in investigating individual complaints.
Concerns can be raised with the
relevant Probation region
or, the Prison and Probation Ombudsman can investigate issues raised by people on probation who are in prison or in approved premises.
You can find details of how to raise a complaint here
