Welcome to the Commission on Fire Prevention and Control (CFPC), a division of the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP). We’re dedicated to serving the citizens of CT by preventing or mitigating the effects of fire and disasters through leadership and collaboration with municipalities, fire departments and regional fire schools by delivery of quality consulting services, technical assistance, training, education, and professional competency certification of career and volunteer fire service personnel throughout Connecticut.
To achieve this goal, we provide state-of-the-art educational programs and firefighter certification. We also provide up-to-date resources for fire service personnel, public educators, and other first responders. We oversee:

Start your journey as a CT firefighter
Join the Connecticut Fire Academy to begin your service as an emergency responder. Run by the CFPC Training Division, the CFA complex in Windsor Locks serves as CT’s central training hub. Our programs include:

Respirator fit testing
Learn how to make sure your respirator fits properly. Fit testing is required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and must be assessed at least annually.

Professional Competency Certification for Connecticut's Fire Service
We want to make sure that all Connecticut firefighters have the knowledge, skill, and abilities they need to protect local citizens—and themselves—from danger. To do so, the CFPC Certification Division guarantees fair, equitable, and consistent testing of candidates against National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Professional Qualification Standards. As an internationally accredited organization, we offer 33 levels of professional competency Certification, recognized worldwide.
