Housing Considerations for Semester Abroad Students
Students accepted to study abroad for a semester may have questions about securing
housing at Chapman the semester before they depart and when they return. Read below
for more information and tips.
On-Campus Housing
Students who study abroad for a semester are permitted to live in Chapman on-campus
housing for the other semester they are not studying abroad during that academic year.
For example if a student is going abroad in the spring semester, they can apply to
live in on-campus housing the fall semester prior to their spring semester abroad.
Or, if a student is going abroad in the fall semester, they can apply to live in on-campus
housing for the spring semester after they return.
Students studying abroad must follow the same
housing application deadlines
that apply to all students. The Center for Global Education will send a list of accepted
semester abroad students to Residence Life and First Year Experience (RLFYE). RLFYE
will cancel students out of their on-campus housing the semester they are abroad so
that they are billed only for their study abroad housing and not double billed for
on-campus housing that semester.
If you have roommates, communicate ahead of time that you will be leaving for your
semester abroad.
Tip: Keep in contact with the specific Area Coordinator or Resident Director of whichever
building your assigned to about your plans.
Off-Campus Housing
Students who live in
off-campus housing
before and/or after their semester abroad have several options they can consider
while abroad. If you have roommates, communicate ahead of time that you will be leaving
for your semester abroad.
If you lease a room in an apartment or house, find someone who can sublet your space
for the semester you are abroad. The Center for Global Education can send an email
on your behalf to students studying abroad the opposite semester of you in the same
academic year who may need housing when they return/before they study abroad. Be as
descriptive as possible and include information about the housing, roommates, cost,
and contact information. Email your request to
globaled@chapman.edu
.
Some apartment buildings in the area may offer short term leasing options (i.e., 4—6
month leases). We recommend students inquire with individual leasing offices directly
for policies and details.
