What US schools taught us about motivating pupils
We are delighted to share that an article written by our Chief Executive, James Freeston, has been published today in Tes. The article highlights practices and ideas from our partner schools in Ohio that resonate with our approach as a Trust, capturing how these schools are redefining motivation as an everyday part of school life.
Alongside David Marillat, Headteacher, and Portia Kamara, Deputy Headteacher, at The Gatwick School, James travelled to the United States to see how our partner schools approach engagement and school culture. They saw that motivation is visible and can be seen throughout the day-to-day activity of the school, for example through celebrations of culture and achievement, the methods used to track academic progress and opportunities to solve problems collectively. As a result, pupils wanted to attend, engage and thrive at school.
The trip to Ohio, supported by Pansophic Learning, affirmed the approach we are taking as a Trust and what we are building into daily school life. This includes building inclusive school communities where every child’s background and voice are valued, regularly and collectively celebrating effort, and building a culture where belonging comes first and learning follows.
As the article notes, when students feel seen and connected, motivation follows naturally. We believe the same is true for us and see motivation as something we embed across the Trust.
