Our campus pairs state-of-the-art educational facilities with thoughtful security practices and top-quality technology to ensure that all students are kept safe throughout the day. When learners feel protected and secure, they are free to explore and reach their full potential.
Safety Planning and Response Team (SPRT)
At Hampton Roads Academy, our Safety Planning and Response Team (SPRT) plays a central role in safety preparedness and response in support of the well-being of the entire HRA community. Through regular meetings, the SPRT collaborates across all divisions to plan, review, and enhance emergency procedures and drills. This proactive approach allows us to stay abreast of best practices and continuously improve our safety protocols. Prevention through the relationships we build with our students is crucial in maintaining a safe and healthy school community.
Collaboration with Authorities
We maintain strong working relationships with the Newport News Police and Fire Departments. These collaborations, coupled with ongoing team and faculty training, ensure that our safety measures align with industry standards and are responsive to evolving needs. Drills and discussions about safety protocols are held throughout the school year, taking into consideration the developmental needs of our students. A trauma-informed approach to how safety is addressed with faculty, staff, and students and how drills are conducted is at the core of our philosophy of maintaining a safe community.
Controlled Access for Enhanced Security
While our campus is welcoming, we prioritize controlled access to maintain a secure environment. Guests and visitors must sign in and out at our receptionist desk and obtain a Visitor’s Pass before conducting any business on campus. To further enhance security, all other doors to the school remain locked throughout the day, and our campus is equipped with a comprehensive camera system, providing an additional layer of surveillance.
Secured Learning Spaces
Inside our classrooms, safety measures are seamlessly integrated into daily routines. Classroom doors are locked throughout the day, contributing to a secure learning environment. SPRT members are equipped with radios, which, coupled with our campus-wide PA system, ensure that swift communication occurs when needed in an emergency. Monthly tests of the PA system are conducted to ensure proper functioning.

We are proud to have a full-time registered nurse on campus every day. This dedicated professional maintains electronic medical records for the entire student body, ensuring a thorough understanding of each student’s medical conditions, needs, and allergies. This information is regularly updated and distributed to faculty and staff as needed, fostering a proactive approach to medical care.
Faculty and Staff Training
Our commitment to medical safety extends to our faculty and staff, who undergo annual training in first aid, CPR, and AED use. This training equips our community with the skills and knowledge necessary to respond effectively to medical emergencies. Additionally, AED devices are strategically installed throughout the campus, providing quick access to life-saving equipment.
Athletic Safety

athletic trainer
