Tiny Things: The Art of the Miniature Print
January 9–May 17, 2026
Gallery 9
Small in size but rich in detail, the black-and-white prints in this exhibition reveal the artists’ exceptional precision, restraint, and imagination. By playing with our perception of scale, they take on an uncanny or unexpectedly monumental presence, inviting close and careful viewing.
Through an eclectic selection of prints from HoMA’s Western collection, Tiny Things invites visitors to encounter miniatures as complete and compelling works of art. In just a few square inches, entire worlds take shape.
Spanning five centuries, the prints are by an eclectic, global mix of artists, including two from Hawai‘i: Sebald Beham, Agostino Carracci, Isami Doi, Theodore de Bry, James Koga, Alexander Samuel MacLeod, Samuel L. Margolies, Alessandro Mastro-Valerio, José Guadalupe Posada, James Swann, Beth van Hoesen.
Ranging from allegorical scenes and classical narratives to sharp observations and quiet absurdities, these miniature prints on view in our gallery devoted to works on paper reveal the extraordinary richness possible on a small scale.
