Introduction
The Poverty Research Centre at the University of Gujrat is a newly established initiative that aims to address the critical issues of poverty, inequality, and human development in developing countries, emphasizing Pakistan. The Syndicate has approved the PRC at the University of Gujrat as a dedicated research centre aligned with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere by 2030.
Pakistan faces significant socio-economic challenges, with approximately 40% of its population living below the poverty line, according to the Economic Survey of Pakistan 2023. The country ranks 144th out of 146 countries on the Global Gender Gap Index (World Economic Forum, 2023) and 133rd out of 151 countries on the Gender Inequality Index (HDR, 2022). Additionally, 38% of children are stunted, and 22 million children are out of school (PDHS, 2018; UNICEF, 2022). The establishment of this Centre is a proactive response to these challenges, aiming to contribute to the national agenda for development as adopted by the Parliament of Pakistan.
The Poverty Research Centre will focus on methodological development, advocacy, and research that informs public policy, particularly concerning multidimensional child poverty, human development, and social protection. It will investigate the extent, dimensions, and factors of poverty in rural and urban areas of Pakistan. The Centre will serve as a platform for engaging young scholars on societal issues, facilitating multidisciplinary research, and promoting researcher exchange programs with various research centres within Pakistan and internationally.
As the University of Gujrat is committed to achieving its research and productivity goals to enhance its position in Times and QS University Rankings, the Poverty Research Centre will play a crucial role in bridging the gap between academic research and policy decisions on poverty-related issues. Through domestic and international stakeholders' dialogue, the Centre will strive to contribute to the development of evidence-based policies and interventions aimed at reducing poverty and promoting inclusive growth in Pakistan.
