Privacy statement
The National Portrait Gallery  is committed to protecting your privacy, including as a result of your interaction/s with our website. The Gallery is required to meet the mandatory requirements set out in the
Privacy Act 1988
(the Privacy Act).
Email newsletters
The Gallery offers a number of regular email bulletins including the monthly Portrait News, Circle of Friends updates and the Education mailing list for updates and special announcements. In sending email newsletters the Gallery complies with the Australian Government's
Spam Act 2003
. All bulk emails have an opt-out feature in their footer which, if utilised, completely removes the email address from the Gallery’s secure email service. Email addresses attached to one list are never merged or added into other Gallery lists.
Automatic logging of information
IP (Internet Protocol) addresses (an IP is the address of a computer) of visitors are automatically logged by our servers. The server makes a record of your visit and logs limited information for statistical purposes – your IP address, top-level domain name (.com, .gov, .edu, .com.au etc), the date and time of your visit to our site, pages accessed and documents downloaded, previous site visited and the type of browser used. These logs are used to administer the website and to diagnose problems in order to be able to rectify them. This data is also used for audience research to help us to improve the site.
IP addresses do not ordinarily contain any personally identifiable information and are aggregated for analysis. Such aggregate data may be used by the Gallery. Recording usage patterns helps us to identify popular areas of our site, and helps us to improve the site. Reports generated on aggregate data are periodically reported on as part of the Gallery’s internal governance.
Collection of personal information
The Gallery collects personal information through its website such as name, phone/fax number, email address/postal address when you provide it in order to receive specific Gallery services such as email newsletters, prize entries or memberships. This information is stored in secure Gallery databases. The information you provide will be used solely by the relevant Gallery staff for its intended purpose, as stated on those pages. Your name, contact details and other information will not be provided to any other person or third-party organisation without your consent.
Your provision of personal details is optional, however some services may not be available to you if you do not provide these details.

Mobile device app specific privacy policy
App Usage Context
The
In Bloom
app is primarily provided on National Portrait Gallery-owned devices for visitor use within the gallery environment. The app may also be made available for public download in the future. This privacy policy applies to both gallery kiosk usage and any future public distribution.
Gallery kiosk environment
The
In Bloom
app is primarily designed for use on gallery-owned devices within the National Portrait Gallery. When using the app on gallery devices:
Camera access is pre-configured by gallery staff for the face painting experience
All facial data processing occurs locally on the device
No personal information is collected or linked to individual users
Each session operates independently with no data retention between users
TrueDepth API and Facial Data Collection
Our face painting feature uses Apple's TrueDepth API to access facial data from your device's front-facing camera. This technology allows us to:
Track facial movements and expressions in real-time
Apply face paint effects accurately to your facial features
Provide augmented reality face painting experiences
What facial data we collect
3D facial mesh data and depth information
Facial feature positions and movements
Real-time facial expressions and head positioning
How we use this data
The facial data collected through the TrueDepth API is used solely for the face painting functionality within the app. This data is processed entirely on your device in real-time and is never stored permanently on your device, transmitted to our servers, or shared with any third parties.
Images and session data
Any images created during your AR face painting experience are stored temporarily in your device's memory only during the active session. These images are automatically removed when you end your session or when the next user begins their session. We do not save, store, or retain any images from your face painting sessions.
Data retention and storage
No facial data from the TrueDepth API is permanently stored anywhere
No session images are saved beyond the current app session
All facial tracking data is processed in real-time and immediately discarded
When you end a session, all associated data is permanently removed from memory
Gallery devices are configured to automatically clear all session data between users
Data sharing
We do not share any data collected through the TrueDepth API or any other app usage data with third parties. All processing occurs locally on your device with no external data transmission.
User control
On gallery devices: Camera access is pre-enabled to provide the intended gallery experience
For future public app versions: You must explicitly grant camera permission before the TrueDepth API can be used, and you can revoke camera access at any time through your device Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera
Face painting features will not function without camera access
You can end any session at any time to immediately clear all temporary data
Gallery staff can assist with any privacy concerns regarding device usage
Data Collection: Camera and TrueDepth Data
When using our face painting features, we access your device's camera and TrueDepth sensors to provide augmented reality effects. On gallery devices, camera access is pre-configured for the visitor experience. This facial data and any resulting images are processed locally on your device, stored only temporarily in memory during your session, and are never permanently stored or transmitted to our servers or third parties. Each session operates independently with automatic data clearing between users.
Disclosure: No Third-Party Data Sharing
We do not share any personal information, facial data, usage data, or images created within our app with any third parties. All data processing occurs locally on your device, and no data is transmitted to external servers or services.
Facial Data
Facial data collected through TrueDepth APIs is never stored, never shared with third parties, and never leaves your device. Any images created during face painting sessions exist only temporarily in memory and are automatically deleted when the session ends.
Facial Data Security
Facial data accessed through TrueDepth APIs is processed using Apple's secure framework
No facial data ever leaves your device or is stored permanently
Session images are held only in temporary memory and automatically cleared
We have implemented session-based data handling to ensure no persistent storage of sensitive information
