Caballito’s story: learning to trust again
With care and compassion this little horse became a happy and healthy horse.
Afraid and suffering
This is Caballito. His name means "little horse" in Spanish, and he lives on Ometepe Island in
Nicaragua
.
Caballito works alongside his new owner, Ismelda. They transport bananas, corn, beans and plantain, but when he first arrived, there was something wrong.
Mistreated in the past, Caballito was afraid to interact with Ismelda. He didn’t want to get hurt again.
His health was suffering. Malnourished with an injured ear, Ismelda didn’t know what to do.
She decided to ask Brooke for help.
With Brooke's help, Ismelda gave Caballito the care needed so that the little horse became a happy horse.
Ismelda has noticed a huge change in Caballito since learning how to support him.
He’s really changed. When I go see him or change his food, he recognises me. He wants to talk to me.

Happy and healthy
Caballito’s life has transformed. He is now a happy and healthy horse, who trusts and has formed a strong bond with his owner.
Thanks to Brooke’s training and guidance, Ismelda has learnt how to communicate with Caballito and understand what he is trying to tell her, even building a feeding station to keep him well-nourished.
It's about motivating others to show this kind of care.
Ismelda
All Caballito needed was respect and compassion, to help him learn to trust again. It takes time to trust, and by handling them with care, horses, donkeys and mules can lead better lives.
Caballito is vital to Ismelda's livelihood, helping her transport goods and with agricultural work during banana season.
How we help
Brooke works with owners in Nicaragua, and around the world, to help animals like Caballito have a better life, by educating them on the benefits of
compassionate handling
.
Working animals are the backbone of communities around the world, helping people to earn an income, send their children to school and put food on their tables.
Giving them the love they deserve can transform their lives.
