History
1910
Iowa Lutheran has an outstanding hospital auxiliary, one of the oldest and largest in the nation, founded in 1910 prior to the hospital's opening.
1914
Established in 1914 by Swedish-American Lutherans, the hospital's services soon expanded beyond the walls of its original building and denominational origins.
Education has always played an important role at Iowa Lutheran. The hospital established its School of Nursing in 1914, training many generations of Iowa nurses. Many of Iowa Lutheran's graduates served in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II.
1942
Iowa Lutheran founded America's first Polio clinic.
1971
Iowa Lutheran founded Des Moines' first kidney dialysis center.
1988
Iowa Lutheran founded Iowa's first Multiple Sclerosis Center.

ACGME
UnityPoint Health - Des Moines sponsors six residency programs approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME): Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, Family Medicine, Psychiatry and Transitional Year. Furthermore, the Podiatry Residency Program is accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education. Five of our residency programs are affiliated with the University of Iowa for Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Transitional Year and Family Practice. Our psychiatry residency program is affiliated with Broadlawns Medical Center.

Iowa Lutheran Hospital is designated as a Premium Cardiac Surgery Center by UnitedHealthcare, an information program designed to help consumers make more informed choices in selecting high-quality cardiac facilities that are more cost effective in the delivery of medical care. To be considered for this designation, facilities must complete a survey and submit detailed outcomes data through the American College of Cardiology (ACC) or the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS).

The Younker Rehabilitation Center at Iowa lutheran Hospita, a satellite center of Iowa Methodist Medical Center Younker Rehabilitaiton Center, is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
