All our pathways to zero carbon in 2050 rely on a high level of energy efficiency, which can be achieved by adopting new technologies, strong national policies and your support. You can
find out more about zero carbon on the gov.uk website.
In early 2019 the Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz declared a Climate Emergency and pledged to make the London Borough of Newham carbon neutral by 2030. You can
read the news article 'Newham declares climate emergency.'
Improved energy efficiency, modern heating systems, and a rapid transition to renewable, de-carbonised transport are all essential if we are to achieve our goal of the low carbon economy. That means any cuts in electricity use in buildings for heating and lighting we make now, will save more carbon reductions in future.
Newham has the highest rate of fuel poverty in England, with nearly a fifth of households affected. Together we must tackle fuel poverty and inequality through adaptation of new technologies, efficient energy sources and the creation of more green economy and low carbon jobs in the borough that local people can access.
There is a particular need to accelerate efforts to achieve affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy supplies for all residents. A sustainable and resilient future is within our reach.
We support the Mayor of London’s energy initiatives and encourage you to visit the
