Elementary Campus Arts
The art curriculum focuses on skill-building and creative expression. In Oakwood’s two art studios, students are encouraged to share their ideas and discoveries as they work with diverse media styles and perspectives. Children create works through the introduction and exposure to art history and contemporary art. Interdisciplinary collaboration with teachers enhances the academic curriculum and brings to life concepts taught in the classroom.
Visual Arts
The elementary school art program is rooted in the belief that all children are artists. Our goal is to build skills, instill confidence, and bring students’ artistic visions to life as they create artworks they can share with pride.
Art is a creative process that should always be rooted in fun. "Mistakes" are viewed as opportunities to foster resilience and build student’s capacities for overcoming obstacles.
While most projects follow guidelines, we encourage all of our young artists to think beyond the boundaries of a project. We work to help students follow their imagination when they are inspired and provide the needed tools and space to see their ideas through. A wide variety of art-making materials are introduced, and we embrace the messiness of the process. Students create 2D and 3D pieces as they learn the formal foundations of art, including line, color, composition, value, shape, form, space, and texture.
Performing Arts
We recognize the transformative power of the performing arts. Our dynamic curriculum encompasses vocal, instrumental, dance, theater, composition, and music production.
Students in Grades 3-6 select from three performing arts electives each semester: chorus, dance, or instrumental music. Beginning in third grade, students may study string instruments and join the string orchestra. By 4th grade, opportunities expand to include participation in concert band, full orchestra, and jazz ensembles.
Our after-school program for Grades 3-6 offers theater, chorus, dance, and guitar classes, music production and composition, and instrumental ensembles. Our students' dedication and talent are celebrated in numerous concerts and performances throughout the year, showcasing the artistic achievements that define Oakwood’s vibrant spirit and commitment to excellence.
