The Academic Resource Center (ARC) offers a variety of opportunities and support services for students to reach their potential and achieve their goals. Programs and services are available to enhance learning, improve skills, and promote success in courses. In the center, students will find computers, study aids, study tables, comfortable spots for reading, and friendly people to offer personalized help. Support for USF distance education students is happily provided by telephone and e-mail, and some tutoring is provided on a number of electronic platforms. All services are provided free of charge.

Supplemental Instruction
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a program that offers regularly scheduled reviews, discussions, study strategies, and exam preparation for historically difficult courses. Each session is guided by an SI leader, a student who has been successful in the course, knows what the professor expects, and can help you succeed!

Tutoring - Walk in and By Appointment
The Academic Resource Center provides tutoring to all its students free of charge. There is no limit to the number of visits a student is allowed per semester, but tutoring sessions are generally limited to an hour to maximize the efforts of both tutor and student. Some tutoring is staffed with regular hours in centers while other subjects are by appointment. By appointment tutoring can either be face to face or online. See

Remember, all students are encouraged to utilize the resources at all points of their academic career to maximize their success in their courses. Tutoring can be utilized when an entire course is difficult, just a concept is fuzzy, or when students want feedback on their progress and work before moving forward with a project or assignment. Students seeking help with writing can come at all stages of the writing process—a complete draft is not necessary!
Because our center is focused on promoting independent learners, the tutors in the Academic Resource Center assist students in both the content of their courses and in their study habits. All the tutors on staff are CRLA trained peer tutors. The center itself is CRLA certified to grant tutors Level 1 (Tutor), Level 2 (Advanced Tutor), and Level 3 (Master Tutor) certifications. Tutors who have achieved Level 3 have gone through 30 hours of training and completed 150 clock hours of tutoring.

Amanda Poston, Assistant Director of the ARC,
is a USF alumna, having received her M.S. Reading Specialist degree from the university. She has been an adjunct professor in USF’s College of Education since 2019 and was an elementary school teacher for 15 years. Amanda loves to travel and is working on adding to her list of the 12 countries she has visited. She also enjoys spending time with her husband, three daughters and five pets!

How much does tutoring cost?
Tutoring is completely free. You can come as many times as you’d like during the semester for as many different subjects as you’d like.
How do I get tutoring?
Some subjects are by appointment, and some are walk-in. To get tutoring for a walk-in subject, like writing, math, and science, you look at the schedules (
here
) and just “walk in” when you are free. Keep in mind that for walk-ins, it is a first-come, first served approach so manage your time effectively. Science and math can tutor multiple students at once, so don’t assume that they are too busy for you if you see someone already working. Always ask. To make an appointment with any of our other tutors, use Tutor Matching Service. Complete instructions are available in
the Portal.
When you set the appointment, make sure to include:
Your name
The class you want tutoring for
What kind of topic you want tutoring for
How long you’d like to meet (30 minutes or an hour?)
All of the times you have that they could pick from
What should I expect in a tutoring session?
The tutor will greet you and ask you what you want to work on for the session and together you’ll set some goals, create a short agenda and get to work. Tutoring is a collaborative service, so you should expect to really participate. You might even talk more than the tutor—that’s a good thing! You might look at books, search things online, or go over your notes. What you do in a session will be determined by you and the tutor. If you want something explained differently or with different material, just ask. At the end of the tutoring session, you’ll be asked your 800 number so we can record the session. At the end of the week, you’ll get an email asking you to complete an evaluation. This helps us assess how we’re doing.
Why do I need to login when I go to tutoring and how do I do that?
The ARC uses login information in order to evaluate how well we are meeting student support needs on campus. All you have to do is provide your 800 number and the course you want help with to the tutor. If you aren’t sure about that information, you can find it all in your portal.
Where do I go for tutoring?
Tutoring is available in the Academic Resource Center, Tower Hall N316.
What do I need to bring to tutoring?
Bring your notes, your textbook, your login information for any online reading/notes, and some questions you have for the tutor. The more organized you are before you come to the session, the more productive it can be. Because every student is different, the tutor cannot know what you might need help with if you say something as broad as “Chapter 2”. Instead, mark things that you want to make sure you understand correctly, or things you don’t understand at all.
Who goes to tutoring?
Tutoring is for all students. We have students visit the center who want to make sure they get the A, students who want to move up a grade, students who need to move up a few grades, students who don’t understand a small portion, and students who are rusty on some things since it has been a while since they understood. No matter who you are, you can benefit from tutoring. In fact, many of our tutors use each other for their other courses!
Who are the tutors?

, but there are some truths about our tutors, regardless of who they are. All of our tutors are current students here at USF, and they’ve all been recommended by faculty for that subject area. Each tutor goes through training as outlined by the College Reading and Learning Association and have to participate in 10 hours of training each year.
What if my tutor cannot answer my question?
Because they are peer tutors, it’s possible that your question is complicated enough that a professor should be the one to answer it. Don’t get discouraged! The tutor will always try to help you understand the material, but they also don’t want to give misinformation.
Why does my tutor need me to bring my books and notes?
The tutors cannot be expected to carry around all the books and notes for all the classes they’ve taken and can tutor—that would be one big backpack! Sometimes, too, information changes, and it’s important that you and the tutor have what is being currently covered by your professor as a resource. While tutors know the content well enough to help with material, they are not experts like your professors and sometimes need to verify that they are remembering things correctly.

Tutoría: sin cita previa y con cita previa
El Centro de Recursos Académicos ofrece tutorías gratuitas a todos sus alumnos. ¿Cuánto cuestan las clases particulares?
Las tutorías son totalmente gratuitas. Puede venir tantas veces como quiera durante el semestre para tantas asignaturas diferentes como desee.

The ARC uses login information in order to evaluate how well we are meeting student support needs on campus. All you have to do is provide your 800 number and the course you want help with to the tutor. If you aren’t sure about that information, you can find it all in your portal.
Where do I go for tutoring?
Tutoring is available in the Academic Resource Center, Tower Hall N316.
What do I need to bring to tutoring?
Bring your notes, your textbook, your login information for any online reading/notes, and some questions you have for the tutor. The more organized you are before you come to the session, the more productive it can be. Because every student is different, the tutor cannot know what you might need help with if you say something as broad as “Chapter 2”. Instead, mark things that you want to make sure you understand correctly, or things you don’t understand at all.
Who goes to tutoring?
Tutoring is for all students. We have students visit the center who want to make sure they get the A, students who want to move up a grade, students who need to move up a few grades, students who don’t understand a small portion, and students who are rusty on some things since it has been a while since they understood. No matter who you are, you can benefit from tutoring. In fact, many of our tutors use each other for their other courses!
Who are the tutors?

, but there are some truths about our tutors, regardless of who they are. All of our tutors are current students here at USF, and they’ve all been recommended by faculty for that subject area. Each tutor goes through training as outlined by the College Reading and Learning Association and have to participate in 10 hours of training each year.
What if my tutor cannot answer my question?
Because they are peer tutors, it’s possible that your question is complicated enough that a professor should be the one to answer it. Don’t get discouraged! The tutor will always try to help you understand the material, but they also don’t want to give misinformation.
Why does my tutor need me to bring my books and notes?
The tutors cannot be expected to carry around all the books and notes for all the classes they’ve taken and can tutor—that would be one big backpack! Sometimes, too, information changes, and it’s important that you and the tutor have what is being currently covered by your professor as a resource. While tutors know the content well enough to help with material, they are not experts like your professors and sometimes need to verify that they are remembering things correctly.

El Centro de Recursos Académicos (ARC) ofrece una variedad de oportunidades y servicios de apoyo para que los alumnos alcancen su potencial y logren sus objetivos. Supplemental Instruction
Supplemental Instruction (SI) es un programa que ofrece revisiones programadas regularmente, debates, estrategias de estudio y preparación de exámenes para cursos históricamente difíciles. ¡Cada sesión es guiada por un líder de SI, un alumno que ha tenido éxito en el curso, sabe lo que el profesor espera, y puede ayudarle a tener éxito!

Tutoría: sin cita previa y con cita previa
El Centro de Recursos Académicos ofrece tutorías gratuitas a todos sus alumnos. No hay límite en el número de visitas que se permite a un alumno por semestre, pero las sesiones de tutoría se limitan generalmente a una hora para maximizar los esfuerzos tanto del tutor como del alumno. Algunas tutorías tienen un horario regular en los centros, mientras que otras materias se imparten con cita previa. Las tutorías con cita previa pueden ser presenciales o en línea. Consulte el

Recuerde, se anima a todos los alumnos a utilizar los recursos en todos los puntos de su carrera académica para maximizar su éxito en sus cursos. Se puede recurrir a la tutoría cuando todo un curso resulta difícil, cuando sólo un concepto está confuso o cuando los alumnos desean recibir información sobre su progreso y su trabajo antes de seguir adelante con un proyecto o una tarea. Los alumnos que soliciten ayuda con la escritura pueden acudir en todas las fases del proceso de escritura: ¡no es necesario que el borrador esté completo!
Dado que nuestro centro se enfoca en promover el aprendizaje independiente, los tutores del Centro de Recursos Académicos ayudan a los alumnos tanto en el contenido de sus cursos como en sus hábitos de estudio. Todos los tutores de la plantilla son tutores entre iguales formados por CRLA. El propio centro está certificado por la CRLA para conceder a los tutores las certificaciones de Nivel 1 (Tutor), Nivel 2 (Tutor avanzado) y Nivel 3 (Tutor maestro). Los tutores que han alcanzado el Nivel 3 han realizado 30 horas de formación y 150 horas de tutoría.

Amanda Poston, Subdirectora del ARC,
es una antigua alumna de la USF, que obtuvo su maestría en Ciencias. Título universitario de especialista en lectura. Es profesora adjunta en la Facultad de Educación de la USF desde 2019 y fue maestra de primaria durante 15 años. A Amanda le encanta viajar y está trabajando para ampliar su lista de los 12 países que ha visitado. También le gusta pasar tiempo con su marido, sus tres hijas y sus cinco mascotas!

¿Cuánto cuestan las clases particulares?
Las tutorías son totalmente gratuitas. Puede venir tantas veces como quiera durante el semestre para tantas asignaturas diferentes como desee.
Cómo consigo clases particulares?
Algunos temas se tratan con cita previa y otros sin cita previa. Para obtener clases particulares de una asignatura sin cita previa, como escritura, matemáticas y ciencias, se consultan los horarios (
aquí
) y simplemente “se entra” cuando se está libre. Tenga en cuenta que se atiende por orden de llegada, así que gestione bien su tiempo. Los profesores de ciencias y matemáticas pueden dar clases a varios alumnos a la vez, así que no dé por sentado que están demasiado ocupados para usted si ve a alguien que ya está trabajando. Qué puedo esperar de una sesión de tutoría?
El tutor le saludará y le preguntará en qué quiere trabajar durante la sesión y juntos fijarán unos objetivos, crearán una breve agenda y se pondrán manos a la obra. La tutoría es un servicio de colaboración, por lo que debe esperar participar de verdad. Puede que incluso hables más que el tutor, ¡y eso es bueno! Puede consultar libros, buscar cosas en Internet o repasar sus apuntes. Lo que haga en una sesión lo determinarán usted y el tutor. Si quiere que le expliquemos algo de otra manera o con otro material, no tiene más que pedirlo. Al final de la sesión de tutoría, se le pedirá su número 800 para que podamos grabar la sesión. Al final de la semana, recibirá un correo electrónico en el que se le pedirá que complete una evaluación. Esto nos ayuda a evaluar cómo lo estamos haciendo.
¿Por qué tengo que iniciar sesión cuando voy a tutoría y cómo lo hago?
El ARC utiliza la información de acceso para evaluar en qué medida satisfacemos las necesidades de apoyo de los alumnos en el campus. Lo único que tiene que hacer es facilitar al tutor su número 800 y el curso en el que desea recibir ayuda. Si no está seguro de esa información, puede encontrarla toda en su portal.
¿Dónde puedo recibir clases particulares?

¿Qué tengo que llevar a la tutoría?
Traiga sus apuntes, su libro de texto, su información de acceso para cualquier lectura/apuntes en línea y algunas preguntas que tenga para el tutor. Cuanto más organizado esté antes de acudir a la sesión, más productiva podrá ser. Como cada alumno es diferente, el tutor no puede saber en qué puede necesitar ayuda si usted dice algo tan amplio como “Capítulo 2”. En su lugar, marque las cosas que quiera asegurarse de entender correctamente, o las cosas que no entiende en absoluto.
Quién va a clases particulares?
Las tutorías son para todos los alumnos. Tenemos alumnos que visitan el centro que quieren asegurarse de obtener la A, alumnos que quieren subir una nota, alumnos que necesitan subir algunas notas, alumnos que no entienden una pequeña parte y alumnos que han olvidado algunas cosas, pues ya ha pasado un tiempo desde que las entendieron. No importa quién sea, puede beneficiarse de las clases particulares. ¡De hecho, muchos de nuestros tutores se utilizan mutuamente para sus otros cursos!

No se puede esperar que los tutores lleven consigo todos los libros y apuntes de todas las clases que han cursado y de las que pueden ser tutores: ¡sería una mochila enorme! A veces, también, la información cambia, y es importante que usted y el tutor tengan como recurso lo que está cubriendo actualmente su profesor. Aunque los tutores conocen el contenido lo suficientemente bien como para ayudar con el material, no son expertos como sus profesores y a veces necesitan verificar que están recordando las cosas correctamente.
