The School of Law (SOL) was established in the year 2005 with an objective of imparting legal education through Open and Distance Learning system. The school strives to ensure high quality education and research through innovative, multi-media learning-teaching pedagogy focussing on learning practical aspects of law, acquiring legal skills and scholarship. The School aims to create awareness about legal rights and responsibilities in the emerging world order.
➣ To design, develop and offer skill-oriented Law and legal programmes through multi-medium having potential demand among learners and various stake holders.
➣ To impart knowledge, skill and attitudinal changes based capacity building Training programmes at different levels and standards on key legal issues.
➣ To conduct legal awareness programmes on law and legal aspects for the benefit of common man through Teleconference and Interactive Radio sessions.
➣ To undertake need based legal Research studies with a primary focus on Laws affecting weaker and vulnerable sections of the society
➣ To undertake consultancy services on request/our own initiative to facilitate the users and stake holders on the legal issues/problems faced by them in their day to day affairs.
➣ To use the ICT and Multimedia Technology in design, development delivery of the programme on offer.
➣ To undertake quality research in the emerging areas of law.
Recognising the importance of legal education and demand for the programmes in Law through open and Distance Learning, IGNOU constituted a Five Member Committee in the year 1994 under the Chairmanship of Prof N.R. Madhava Menon, an eminent legal educationist. This Committee suggested for developing professional programmes in Law including programmes in Paralegal Education, Court Administration, Law and Office Management, Legal Aid administration, Occupation-based and Management-Oriented Legal Education for middle and top-level personnel in government and industry. The UGC Curriculum Development Centre in Law (CDC), set up in 1990, under the Chairmanship of Prof Upendra Baxi, an eminent jurist, also underscored the importance of Distance Education in Law as an inclusive legal education for wider participation in legal profession, judicial appointments and government law offices.
The School of Law organised a brain-storming session in June, 2007 to prepare a roadmap for the legal education in India. The important recommendations of the session enabled SOL to plan and develop a range of programmes in domestic laws such as Cyber Law, Criminal Justice, IPR, Para Legal, Consumer law, Business Laws and also international domain Law such as Human Right, Humanitarian Law and Human Trafficking etc.
The 21st century is quick paced, technology driven, innovation and development situated economy, driving towards need for rapid changes in legal and social landscape. It is more imperative to understand law rather than just securing information around a framework of rules that oversees a society. In such a scenario, it is fundamental for educational institutions to investigate unused roads and attempt multidisciplinary approach and tools for skill-building of the prospective learners .The school of Law, IGNOU aims to be a school of par excellence in imparting providing legal education, creation of legal awareness to Common Man on regular basis through open distance learning and online platforms, imparting training through capacity building programmes and undertaking legal Research and Consultancy Services.

Brief Profile:
Prof. (Dr) Gurmeet Kaur is the Director, School of Law, IGNOU. She holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Law from Delhi University. A gold medallist in LLB and a topper in LLM, Ms Kaur has been awarded doctorate degree in law (Ph.D.) from Faculty of Law, Delhi University.
She holds teaching experience of more than 20 years and has extensively contributed towards producing innovative curriculum design, self-learning materials, audio/ video programme,writing and editing units/modules for various programmes, guided Research Scholars and coordinated programmes in the area of cyber law, IPR , consumer law, Gender studies and Doctrate of philosophy (Ph.d in law ) aiming to foster conducive learning environment.She at present is also coordinating two MOOC's programme: Consumer law;and Gender in law. She has conducted various radio, television and web based counselling for the learners through Gyan Vani, Gyan Darshan and Swayam prabha channels of IGNOU.
Dr Gurmeet kaur has actively Contributed towards corporate life of university through participation in academic and administrative committees from time to time. She is also member of Statutory bodies such as Board of studies of School of Law and other Schools of studies in IGNOU, member of Research Council, IGNOU, member of the Doctoral Research Committee of School of Law, IGNOU, Member of IGNOU Committe against sexual harrassement (ICASH) and nodal officer for NAAC from School of Law.
Dr. Gurmeet Kaur has published various research papers in prestigious journals, presented papers in various conferences and seminars and has been invited as resource person. She is a recipient of the Hira Lal Daga Memorial Medal (Gold Medal); Prof. P.G. Krishnan Memorial Prize; Law Union Prize and Academic Entrepreneurship Award in the field of Law.

Prof (Dr) Suneet K Srivastava joined IGNOU in 2005. Prior to IGNOU she taught in The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences for around 13 months.
She is aJRF in law and a Phd in International Law. Prof Srivastava is an alumni of Kashi Hindu Vishwavidyalaya and is a topper of LLB and LLM. She has been a topper throughout a career. She has received the UGC Merit Scholarship in First and Second Year of LLB and holds distinctions in subjects of LLB.
She has designed and developed two Programmes on Intellectual Property Rights and has written several Units for different programmes of SOL and other departments of IGNOU. She has contributed academically in preparing videos and audios for different levels of Programmes of IGNOU, writing Units, giving lectures and being a part of expert committee in designing and developing different programmes of IGNOU She has also given a no of lectures on various laws in seminars, conferences and consortiums.
She has played an active role in the corporate life of IGNOU as a member of Patent facilitation Unit, MOU Committee, Academic Council, IPR advisory Committee, Legal Advisory Committee, RSD Committe, Innovation Council of IGNOU and also in other organisations. She has also served as the Director, School of Law, IGNOU. Prof. Srivastava is also the Board member of Several Universities. She has also guided and supervised many Ph.D students.

Prof. (Dr) Anand Gupta is the Associate Professor in the School of Law, IGNOU. holds PhD in Disability Rights. His LL.M. dissertation is on Child Rights. He has a excellent academic record and secured 1st position in LL.M. He joined School of Law IGNOU in 2006. Prior to joining IGNOU, he Taught law at Lucknow University and in a college. He holds PG Diploma in Distance Education (PGDDE) from IGNOU.Dr Gupta specializes in Disability Law, Child Law, International Law, Family Law, Constitutional Law and Human Rights. His other areas of interest are Commercial Law, Copyright Law, Environmental Law and Cyber Law.
Dr. Gupta has successfully guided PhD in Law. He has published research papers in reputed journals in areas of Disability Law, Child Law, Human Rights, Constitutional Law etc. He has also presented papers in various conferences and seminars and has been invited as resource person. He has been the resource person in the UGC faculty development programme, Kanooni Salah programme on Gyanvani and Legal Awareness on Gyandarshan programmes of IGNOU. Dr. Gupta has been actively involved in the design, development, writing, editting etc of the curriculum of the programmes of IGNOU and other institutions. He has developed audio video programmes for the various programmes. He has also conducted radio, television and web based counselling for the learners.

Brief Profile:
Prof. (Dr) Gurmeet Kaur is the Director, School of Law, IGNOU. She holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Law from Delhi University. A gold medallist in LLB and a topper in LLM, Ms Kaur has been awarded doctorate degree in law (Ph.D.) from Faculty of Law, Delhi University.
She holds teaching experience of more than 20 years and has extensively contributed towards producing innovative curriculum design, self-learning materials, audio/ video programme,writing and editing units/modules for various programmes, guided Research Scholars and coordinated programmes in the area of cyber law, IPR , consumer law, Gender studies and Doctrate of philosophy (Ph.d in law ) aiming to foster conducive learning environment.She at present is also coordinating two MOOC's programme: Consumer law;and Gender in law. She has conducted various radio, television and web based counselling for the learners through Gyan Vani, Gyan Darshan and Swayam prabha channels of IGNOU.
Dr Gurmeet kaur has actively Contributed towards corporate life of university through participation in academic and administrative committees from time to time. She is also member of Statutory bodies such as Board of studies of School of Law and other Schools of studies in IGNOU, member of Research Council, IGNOU, member of the Doctoral Research Committee of School of Law, IGNOU, Member of IGNOU Committe against sexual harrassement (ICASH) and nodal officer for NAAC from School of Law.
Dr. Gurmeet Kaur has published various research papers in prestigious journals, presented papers in various conferences and seminars and has been invited as resource person. She is a recipient of the Hira Lal Daga Memorial Medal (Gold Medal); Prof. P.G. Krishnan Memorial Prize; Law Union Prize and Academic Entrepreneurship Award in the field of Law.
Teaching and Research Interests:
• Primary interests: Cyber Law, Compensatory Law, Criminal law, Consumer protection and Human rights Law.
• Additional interests: Intellectual property Law, Jurisprudence, constitutional law, Family Law, Gender and law, women and Law, domestic violence, Human Trafficking, Media Law and Income Tax.

Prof (Dr) Suneet K Srivastava joined IGNOU in 2005. Prior to IGNOU she taught in The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences for around 13 months.
She is aJRF in law and a Phd in International Law. Prof Srivastava is an alumni of Kashi Hindu Vishwavidyalaya and is a topper of LLB and LLM. She has been a topper throughout a career. She has received the UGC Merit Scholarship in First and Second Year of LLB and holds distinctions in subjects of LLB.
She has designed and developed two Programmes on Intellectual Property Rights and has written several Units for different programmes of SOL and other departments of IGNOU. She has contributed academically in preparing videos and audios for different levels of Programmes of IGNOU, writing Units, giving lectures and being a part of expert committee in designing and developing different programmes of IGNOU She has also given a no of lectures on various laws in seminars, conferences and consortiums.
She has played an active role in the corporate life of IGNOU as a member of Patent facilitation Unit, MOU Committee, Academic Council, IPR advisory Committee, Legal Advisory Committee, RSD Committe, Innovation Council of IGNOU and also in other organisations. She has also served as the Director, School of Law, IGNOU. Prof. Srivastava is also the Board member of Several Universities. She has also guided and supervised many Ph.D students.

Prof. (Dr) Anand Gupta is the Associate Professor in the School of Law, IGNOU. holds PhD in Disability Rights. His LL.M. dissertation is on Child Rights. He has a excellent academic record and secured 1st position in LL.M. He joined School of Law IGNOU in 2006. Prior to joining IGNOU, he Taught law at Lucknow University and in a college. He holds PG Diploma in Distance Education (PGDDE) from IGNOU.Dr Gupta specializes in Disability Law, Child Law, International Law, Family Law, Constitutional Law and Human Rights. His other areas of interest are Commercial Law, Copyright Law, Environmental Law and Cyber Law.
Dr. Gupta has successfully guided PhD in Law. He has published research papers in reputed journals in areas of Disability Law, Child Law, Human Rights, Constitutional Law etc. He has also presented papers in various conferences and seminars and has been invited as resource person. He has been the resource person in the UGC faculty development programme, Kanooni Salah programme on Gyanvani and Legal Awareness on Gyandarshan programmes of IGNOU. Dr. Gupta has been actively involved in the design, development, writing, editting etc of the curriculum of the programmes of IGNOU and other institutions. He has developed audio video programmes for the various programmes. He has also conducted radio, television and web based counselling for the learners.
Dr. Gupta is the associate member of the Indian Society of International Law (ISIL) Delhi. He has contributed to the corporate life of the university which include inter alia School Board member of the School of Law and other Schools of IGNOU. member of Research Council, IGNOU (2023-2025), member of the Doctoral Research Committee of School of Law, IGNOU, member of the Academic Council, IGNOU (2016-2018).
