Upper Mid’s first Badminton Bonanza was a huge success! 🏸 Over the last few weeks, students in PE classes narrowed down a winner for each cohort in advance of today’s final tournament. Once being named a cohort winner, each student selected a faculty or staff member to be their doubles teammate. Today in the Gym with the whole division cheering, teams were eliminated until only one team was left standing! Congratulations to Eujay S and Ms. Mietz for winning the first ever UMS Badminton Bonanza trophy! 🏆

Marymount’s Artist-in-Residence Mark Milroy opens his newest solo exhibition, Jumbo, at JJ Murphy Gallery on Wednesday, April 15! 🖼️🎨 Through portraits, still lifes, and deeply personal narratives, Mr. Milroy transforms the everyday into something poetic and powerfully his own. Prishaa S. ‘26 is reaching new heights in her research journey! ✨After advancing through multiple rounds at the TerraNYC STEM Fair, her work in quantum computing applications earned First Place 🥇 in Mathematical Sciences and a U.S. Air Force award for outstanding work. Prishaa will now advance to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair—the world’s largest pre-college STEM competition—this May in Phoenix, Arizona. Award-winning author and illustrator Sophie Blackall visited Lower School this week to discuss her work and sources of inspiration 📝📚🤩 In addition to reading If We Were Dogs to Nursery/Pre-K, she read Farmhouse to K-II and also led them in an illustration exercise. We will forever remember this special visit because Sophie left us an autographed drawing of Ivy & Bean which will hang in the LS Library!

Congratulations to Charlotte E. ’28, who completed the NYC Half Marathon last weekend! 🏃♀️🏅 Her time was 1:56:26, which placed her 29th in the 16-19-year-old female group. Meet Sydney Wilcenski, a new physical education teacher at the Upper Campus! Ms. Wilcenski grew up in New Jersey and moved to Baltimore, Maryland, to attend undergrad at Loyola University Maryland and graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania. She taught elementary general and special education in Maryland before moving to NYC. In her free time, you can find her playing volleyball 🏐 or crafting 🧶 She also loves a good book 📚 and is always open to recommendations! Meet Yoshiko Maruiwa, the new art teacher for Classes K-II! She is originally from Japan 🇯🇵 and moved to the US to pursue her passion for art education. She earned degrees from Sophia University in Tokyo, Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, and Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. With extensive experience teaching art in museums, communities, and schools, Ms. Maruiwa is excited to bring joy, creativity, and expertise to her new role. Outside of teaching, she enjoys weaving and sewing 🪡 traveling ✈️ visiting museums 🖼️ animals 🐶 beaches 🏖️ and, most of all, cooking 🧑🍳 and sharing meals with her family and friends. Ellie Burns joins the #marymountny community teaching Contemporary World History as well as Class X Global History. She was born in Pennsylvania but grew up in Georgia and attended Haverford College for undergrad. Ms. Burns majored in history and religion and played varsity soccer ⚽️ before returning to Georgia to teach high school history. She then came to New York for her master’s at Teachers College at Columbia University and loved New York so much she decided to stay! Ms. Burns is excited to become part of both the Upper Mid and Upper School faculty. In her free time, you can find Ms. Burns running 🏃♀️ through New York, reading 📖 in Central Park, or trying a new coffee ☕️ shop. A warm welcome to Ms. Burns! 💙🦁💙

We are kicking off our new faculty spotlights with Crystal Frommert, a new Upper Middle and Upper School Math Teacher! Mrs. Frommert brings 24 years of experience teaching secondary math in both international schools and an all-girls Catholic school in Houston. Her love for educational collaboration and leadership extends beyond the classroom, serving as an administrator and as a published author in education. In August, Mrs. Frommert moved to NYC with her husband, daughter, and their beloved Sheltie dog. As a new Marymount parent, she appreciates the warm welcome from the #marymountny community. Seven #marymountny Upper Schoolers joined students from @marymount.cuernavaca and @marymountla for the first RSHM Social Service Week last month in Mexico. They engaged in community service initiatives including supporting kids at a children’s home and at an orphanage, serving breakfast at a local St. Vincent de Paul center, and spending time with retired nuns at an elder care facility. This global initiative allowed our students to truly live out the RSHM mission “that all may have life, and have it to the full.” #careservelead

Upper Mid’s first Badminton Bonanza was a huge success! 🏸 Over the last few weeks, students in PE classes narrowed down a winner for each cohort in advance of today’s final tournament. Once being named a cohort winner, each student selected a faculty or staff member to be their doubles teammate. Today in the Gym with the whole division cheering, teams were eliminated until only one team was left standing! Congratulations to Eujay S and Ms. Mietz for winning the first ever UMS Badminton Bonanza trophy! 🏆

Prishaa S. ‘26 is reaching new heights in her research journey! ✨After advancing through multiple rounds at the TerraNYC STEM Fair, her work in quantum computing applications earned First Place 🥇 in Mathematical Sciences and a U.S. Air Force award for outstanding work. Award-winning author and illustrator Sophie Blackall visited Lower School this week to discuss her work and sources of inspiration 📝📚🤩 In addition to reading If We Were Dogs to Nursery/Pre-K, she read Farmhouse to K-II and also led them in an illustration exercise. We will forever remember this special visit because Sophie left us an autographed drawing of Ivy & Bean which will hang in the LS Library!

Meet Sydney Wilcenski, a new physical education teacher at the Upper Campus! Ms. Wilcenski grew up in New Jersey and moved to Baltimore, Maryland, to attend undergrad at Loyola University Maryland and graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania. She taught elementary general and special education in Maryland before moving to NYC. In her free time, you can find her playing volleyball 🏐 or crafting 🧶 She also loves a good book 📚 and is always open to recommendations! Meet Yoshiko Maruiwa, the new art teacher for Classes K-II! She is originally from Japan 🇯🇵 and moved to the US to pursue her passion for art education. She earned degrees from Sophia University in Tokyo, Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, and Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. With extensive experience teaching art in museums, communities, and schools, Ms. Maruiwa is excited to bring joy, creativity, and expertise to her new role. Outside of teaching, she enjoys weaving and sewing 🪡 traveling ✈️ visiting museums 🖼️ animals 🐶 beaches 🏖️ and, most of all, cooking 🧑🍳 and sharing meals with her family and friends. Ellie Burns joins the #marymountny community teaching Contemporary World History as well as Class X Global History. She was born in Pennsylvania but grew up in Georgia and attended Haverford College for undergrad. Ms. Burns majored in history and religion and played varsity soccer ⚽️ before returning to Georgia to teach high school history. She then came to New York for her master’s at Teachers College at Columbia University and loved New York so much she decided to stay! Ms. Burns is excited to become part of both the Upper Mid and Upper School faculty. In her free time, you can find Ms. Burns running 🏃♀️ through New York, reading 📖 in Central Park, or trying a new coffee ☕️ shop. A warm welcome to Ms. Burns! 💙🦁💙

Mrs. Frommert brings 24 years of experience teaching secondary math in both international schools and an all-girls Catholic school in Houston. Her love for educational collaboration and leadership extends beyond the classroom, serving as an administrator and as a published author in education. In August, Mrs. Frommert moved to NYC with her husband, daughter, and their beloved Sheltie dog. As a new Marymount parent, she appreciates the warm welcome from the #marymountny community. Seven #marymountny Upper Schoolers joined students from @marymount.cuernavaca and @marymountla for the first RSHM Social Service Week last month in Mexico. They engaged in community service initiatives including supporting kids at a children’s home and at an orphanage, serving breakfast at a local St. Vincent de Paul center, and spending time with retired nuns at an elder care facility. This global initiative allowed our students to truly live out the RSHM mission “that all may have life, and have it to the full.” #careservelead

Each year in our M-PACT program, Class X Social Justice students advocate for a local non-profit organization that addresses a cause they care about. This year #marymountny became one of the first schools to offer the Atherton Award in recognition of entrepreneurial spirit in young women 🏆 Brianna F. ‘25 was named the winner for her innovative ideas to streamline services and improve revenue for the MTA! Olivia W. ‘26 and Marcella C-R. ‘26 were also recognized as finalists for the award. All three will receive grants and mentorship as they develop their ideas further.
