Brown bin collections update as Derby food waste service stabilises
Published: 16 April 2026
Extra crews and vehicles are helping restore brown bin collections as Derby’s new food waste service continues to stabilise.
We recognise the frustration some residents have experienced with recent brown bin collection delays, and we’re sorry for the disruption.
This follows the introduction of our new food waste service - a national requirement and major change for the city. As with any new service of this scale, there have been some early challenges, including delays to new vehicles and initial staffing changes.
While most collections are running as planned, we recognise some areas have been affected. Crews are working hard to catch up, with additional staff and vehicles now in place to help stabilise the service.
As we prioritise statutory waste collections (food waste and black bins) there may be some temporary disruption to brown bin collections. We appreciate this is frustrating and we are working to restore full service as quickly as possible.
We’ll continue to keep residents updated and improve how we share information on affected areas.
Thank you for your patience and support while we stabilise the service.
