SPERO Program
Special Program for the Enhancement of Resources and Opportunities
LSUA’s SPERO program is a four-year inclusive postsecondary education program which aims to bring hope to the lives of students with intellectual disabilities. SPERO provides skills training classes to assist students in leading more independent lives and take up gainful employment in their communities.

SPERO Mentors
SPERO mentors assist and support program students while they are attending their SPERO classes, audited courses, employment training, LSUA events, and community outings. Mentor must be a full-time student and have an overall college GPA of at least 2.5.

Admission Criteria
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
Be 18–28 years old at time of admission.
Have a documented intellectual disability (34 CFR § 668.233) that impacts academic performance.
Have completed high school with a regular diploma, career diploma, or certificate of achievement.
Have emotional stability, self-motivation, and the ability to participate in campus life and follow program policies.
Demonstrate appropriate university/classroom behavior (no history of IEP-based behavior plans).
Have no current disruptive/aggressive behaviors; past incidents require a clearance letter from a licensed professional confirming behaviors have ceased.
Manage their own medication, dietary, and medical needs.
Have basic math (including calculator use), reading, writing, computer, and self-care skills.
Show commitment to work and personal independence.
Participate in a personal interview without prompting.
Provide required documents:
Completed application
State-issued ID
High school exit document
Official medical diagnosis of intellectual disability
IEP/Educational or Psychological evaluation with current scores
Clearance letter (if applicable)
Have the potential to achieve goals within the LSUA SPERO setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is SPERO a residential program?
No, SPERO students do not live LSUA campus.
Can SPERO students receive a degree?
SPERO students do not receive a college degree or traditional college credits.
Does SPERO offer transportation services to and from campus?
Transportation services are not currently provided.
How many participants are offered admission each year?
Four students are admitted to SPERO every fall semester.
Who teaches SPERO students?
SPERO Staff teach SPERO skills classes and LSUA faculty teach audited courses.
Will SPERO students have mentors?
All SPERO students are paired with traditional LSUA student workers that serve as their mentors. SPERO mentors accompany and assist SPERO students at all times.
What type of certificate will the student receive after completing the four-year program?
SPERO students will receive a SPERO Certificate of Achievement after 4 year program completion.
Does SPERO host tours?
SPERO is not currently providing tours.
