The curriculum at TALA is the beating heart of our school community. We believe, and know, that ‘learning changes lives’. That is why we exist!
Our whole-school curriculum is rooted in the following three
academy wide
learning objectives, where students should:
Become
highly educated
in each subject discipline;
Continually develop age appropriate
literacy skills
(reading, writing, and speaking);
Develop their cultural and social capital, so that they understand the world and people around them.
Our pedagogical Approach
At TALA, teaching and learning is pedagogically informed by
Rosenshine’s principles of instruction
. We use these principles when designing long, medium and short-term curriculum plans.
When creating lessons, we use Rosenshine’s 10 fundamental principles:
Begin with review of previous learning
Present new material in small steps- student practice after each step
Ask a lot of questions
Provide models
Guide student practice
Check understanding
Obtain high success rate
Provide scaffolds for difficult tasks
Require and monitor independent practice
Engage in weekly/monthly review
In addition, we continue to develop ways to engage all pupils in lessons, through inclusive questioning techniques, powerful assessment for learning techniques, and adaptation of tasks for different learners.
