English Additonal Language
EAL
English as an Additional Language (EAL)
refers to students who have a language background other than English and have migrated to Australia. At Warrnambool East Primary School, there are over 23 languages other than English spoken at home. We recognise that our multicultural families provide a rich tapestry in our school community and classrooms; a place where cultural diversity is embraced, and students can build on refining their linguistic abilities in a safe and supported environment.
At our school we encourage children to continue to speak, read and write in their home language, the language they know best, while also developing English through the support of our EAL program and classroom teachers. Maintaining home language strengthens students’ bilingual skills and supports their overall learning. There are many benefits to being bilingual, including strengthening their sense of identity and connection to family, community and culture.
Our EAL programs support students to develop proficiency in English and provide an opportunity to thrive in the Australian school system. These programs enable students to use English effectively to access and engage with the full range of curriculum content across all learning areas.
Warrnambool East Primary School is also the coordinating school for the Warrnambool EAL Cluster program. This Department of Education program supports EAL across 26 primary and secondary schools in our region. It provides opportunities for schools to explore best practice and effective strategies and resources; and engage in professional development to strengthen the supports for EAL students and their families.
