Virginia Military Institute is located in historic Lexington, Virginia in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley.
VMI is a public, four-year, undergraduate military college located in the historic Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Lexington (population about 7,000) also home to Washington & Lee University, offers a stimulating cultural atmosphere, a relaxed rural pace, and a diverse economic base to make life both pleasant and rewarding. Lexington Rockbridge Chamber of Commerce
VMI’s post consists of 59 buildings on 200 acres. It contains many buildings dating from the 19th century, is recognized as a national historic district, and Old Barracks is recognized as a national historic landmark.
VMI also owns several off-post properties, including McKethan Park— the site of the VMI observatory—the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park, the Jackson House Museum and the adjoining Davidson-Tucker House in downtown Lexington. VMI also owns much of the Chessie Trail, a multipurpose recreational trail linking Buena Vista and Lexington, and works with private landowners to facilitate access.
