History and Evolution
Originally conceived by a group of Macao residents and motor fanatics, the Macau Grand Prix began in 1954 as a race for amateur enthusiasts. However, it quickly flourished into a professional race meeting. In 1967, the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix was introduced and from that year, the combination of two and four-wheel racing is one of the Macau Grand Prix’s many unique elements. A race for touring cars – the Guia Race – was introduced in 1972, and has become a perennial favourite amongst the global tin top fan base. In 1983, the Macau Grand Prix embarked upon its Formula 3 era and began to feature young drivers on their way to Formula 1. A sportscar race was introduced in 2008, and the Macau GT Cup quickly became a firm favourite amongst drivers, teams, manufactures and fans.
