Conduct and Safety Policies
Overview
Policy Summary
At the Institute for Industrial Technology (IIT) Lagos, we are committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, safety, inclusion, and responsibility in everything we do. As a leading technical vocational education and training (TVET) institution with over 25 years of experience, IIT empowers school leavers (aged 16–23), tertiary graduates, and working professionals through practical, industry-driven programmes in electromechanics, mechatronics, plant maintenance, renewable energy, and related technologies.
These policies reflect our core values and support our mission of transforming lives while preparing competent, ethical, and responsible technicians for Nigeria’s industrial sector. They apply to all students, trainees, staff, contractors, partners, and visitors. We regularly review and communicate these policies to foster a culture of accountability, respect, and continuous improvement.
The policy summary below includes the following:
Minor and Safeguarding Policy
Whistleblowing Policy
Anti-Bullying Policy
Anti-Bribery and Corruption
Diversity and Inclusion
Environment and Sustainability
Health & Safety
Modern Slavery Safeguarding
Minor and Safeguarding Policy
Commitment to Protection
The safety, welfare, and holistic development of every individual at IIT is our top priority. Our Safeguarding Policy creates a secure environment for intensive workshop-based technical training.
Key Objectives
Zero tolerance for abuse, exploitation, neglect, harassment, or harm
Special protection for young school leavers transitioning into hands-on industrial training
Promotion of a culture of vigilance, care, and mutual respect within the Institute environment, hostel and industry placements.
Our Approach
Regular training for all staff and students on recognising and responding to concerns (staff development programmes, student’s work ethics courses, advisory system, spiritual direction)
All doors in the institute are see-through doors (with glass panels) to foster openness
CCTV Cameras in public areas within the premises
Designated Safeguarding Leads available for confidential advice and support (student affairs office and website feedback form)
Clear procedures for reporting, investigation, and timely intervention (panel investigation)
We encourage every member of the IIT community to speak up and contribute to a safe learning space where trainees can focus on building technical skills and personal values without fear.
Report a Concern
If you have a safeguarding or bullying issue, please contact the Student Affairs Officer or use our confidential reporting channels.
Whistleblowing Policy
Encouraging Openness
IIT promotes a culture of transparency, integrity, and accountability. We believe speaking up about concerns is essential to protecting our students, staff, and institutional mission.
What You Can Report
Malpractice, fraud, or corruption
Breaches of policy or safeguarding issues
Health and safety risks or any serious wrongdoing
Malicious damaging and stealing of the Institute’s property
How It Works
Confidential or anonymous reporting options through designated channels (The Director’s office, Student Affairs Office, Website feedback section, Advisor, Suggestion Box)
Prompt, thorough, and independent investigation (panel investigation)
Strict protection against retaliation or victimisation for good-faith reports
By fostering openness, we enable early resolution of issues and uphold the ethical standards that have defined our 25+ years of service to Nigerian youths and industry.
Raise a Concern
Contact a designated whistleblowing officer (Student Affairs Officer) or use our confidential reporting system. Your voice matters.
Anti-Bullying Policy
Creating a Respectful Environment
IIT is committed to a positive, supportive learning atmosphere free from all forms of bullying, harassment, intimidation, or victimisation — whether physical, verbal, cyber, or relational.
Why It Matters
A bullying-free environment is essential for our trainees, especially young school leavers, to develop confidence, teamwork, and the interpersonal skills required for successful industrial careers in mechanical, electrical, automation, and maintenance fields.
Our Strategy
Prevention through orientation, ethics and values education, peer mentoring, and student and staff awareness campaigns, advisory system, chaplaincy activities.
Clear, accessible reporting procedures (The Director’s office, Student Affairs Office, Website feedback section, Advisor, Suggestion Box)
Prompt, fair investigation and proportionate response to incidents (panel investigation)
We actively promote positive behaviour and collaboration in workshops and group projects, ensuring all trainees — school leavers, graduates, and working professionals — can thrive.
Report Bullying
If you experience or witness bullying, report it immediately to the Student Affairs Officer or Advisor. All reports are taken seriously and handled confidentially.
Anti-Bribery and Corruption
Our Pledge
IIT upholds the highest standards of honesty, transparency, and ethical conduct in all operations. We strictly prohibit bribery, corruption, facilitation payments, kickbacks, or any form of improper advantage.
Scope Key Measures
This policy covers all staff, students, contractors, suppliers, industry partners, and visitors involved in admissions, assessments, procurement, placements, and collaborations.
Key Measures
Full compliance with Nigerian anti-corruption laws and international best practices
Regulated gifts and hospitality to avoid conflicts of interest (all gifts given to staff related to assignment in IIT, must be disclosed to the Human Resources officer department)
IIT does not offer kick-backs in order to skew the bidding process.
Regular awareness training and robust internal controls (staff development programme)
By maintaining integrity, we ensure fair access to quality technical education and efficient use of resources in support of our mission to bridge Nigeria’s skills gap and empower youths.
Speak Up
Any suspected breach should be reported through our whistleblowing channels (the Director’s office, Human Resource Office, website feedback section, Suggestion Box) without fear of reprisal.
Diversity and Inclusion
Our Commitment
IIT fosters Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with respect to the identity of the Institute by valuing differences in ethnicity, religion, socio-economic background, age, ability, and perspective.
Focus Areas
(with respect to the nature of the programme and available infrastructure).
Equal opportunities for participation and success in all programmes
Removal of barriers and reasonable accommodations for diverse needs
Promotion of fairness, mutual respect, and cultural sensitivity
While our Mission Programmes primarily support urban male youths aged 16–23 to address youth unemployment and poverty, our General Programmes are open to a broader range of graduates and workers. We integrate inclusion principles into teaching, assessment, and daily campus life.
Benefits
This approach enriches technical training, strengthens teamwork in multicultural industrial settings, and prepares graduates to contribute responsibly to Nigeria’s diverse workforce.
Get Involved
We welcome feedback (see website feedback section) on how to further strengthen diversity and inclusion at IIT with respect to our identity.
Environment and Sustainability
Education and Sustainability Philosophy
IIT integrates environmental responsibility into its operations, training, and campus culture in line with our Education and Sustainability Philosophy.
Key Initiatives
Equipping students with practical skills in renewable energy, energy efficiency, green technologies, and responsible resource management
Promotion of waste reduction, recycling, energy conservation, and sustainable workshop practices
Encouraging environmentally conscious behaviours among students and staff
Through hands-on programmes and industry exposure, we prepare technicians who can support sustainable industrial development in Nigeria. This reflects our holistic approach — developing not only technical competence but also ethical awareness and responsibility toward the environment and future generations.
Join Our Efforts
Students and staff are encouraged to participate in campus sustainability activities and apply green practices in their training and future careers.
Health & Safety
Priority on Well-Being
At IIT, the health, safety, and well-being of all students, trainees, staff, and visitors is paramount, especially in our high-risk technical workshops involving machinery, electrical systems, welding, refrigeration, and plant maintenance.
Key Commitments
Compliance with Nigerian occupational health and safety regulations and best practices
Comprehensive risk assessments and safe work procedures for all training activities
Provision and enforcement of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
Regular safety training, inductions, and refresher sessions
On-campus first-aid facilities and trained safety officers for immediate assistance
Every student is enrolled in a health insurance plan, with access to prompt medical care through our partnership with a nearby clinic for emergencies and urgent concerns. We also promote personal responsibility through hygiene practices and health awareness sessions.
Our Goal
To engrave safety as a core attitude, ensuring a secure environment where trainees can fully focus on acquiring industry-relevant skills and preparing for safe, productive careers.
Safety First
Report any hazards or unsafe conditions immediately to a safety officer, staff member (Student Affairs Office), website feedback section or the suggestion box.
Modern Slavery Safeguarding
Zero Tolerance
IIT takes a firm stand against modern slavery, human trafficking, forced labour, child labour, and all forms of exploitation.
Our Measures
Due diligence in recruitment, volunteer engagement, supply chains, industry partnerships, and training placements
Awareness training for staff and students on recognising signs of exploitation
Clear reporting mechanisms for any concerns
This policy upholds ethical labour standards in compliance with Nigerian laws and international conventions. It directly supports our mission as a social project: to empower vulnerable youths ethically and protect human dignity through quality technical education.
Report Concerns
Any suspected case of modern slavery or exploitation can be raised confidentially through our designated channels.
