Anniversary Julius Bar Sip-in Tuesday, April 21st | 6:00 PM

The
Julius’ Bar Sip-In
took place on April 21, 1966, when members of the Mattachine Society staged a bold act of civil disobedience at Julius’, one of New York’s oldest bars. By openly declaring themselves gay and requesting service—knowing they would be refused under discriminatory state liquor laws—they exposed the systemic criminalization of LGBTQ+ people and challenged the idea that queer gatherings were inherently “disorderly.” Their quiet but radical action became one of the earliest public protests for LGBTQ+ rights, helping lay the groundwork for the movement that would follow.
As communities across the country commemorate the
60th anniversary of the Julius’ Bar Sip‑In
, Stonewall is proud to be the
only site in the South
participating in this nationwide celebration. These coordinated events honor one of the earliest acts of LGBTQ+ resistance and highlight its enduring impact on our movement.
