Today, Wednesday, 25th February 2026, as part of activities lined up to commemorate World Hearing Day 2026, the Department of Ear, Nose, Throat, Head and Neck Surgery, University of Benin Teaching Hospital, carried out a community outreach at Iyowa Primary School, Iyowa. With the theme, “From Communities to Classroom: Hearing Care for All Children,” the team took hearing care to a community and directly into the classroom, reinforcing the importance of early detection and timely intervention in children. The outreach brought together pupils, members of staff, and some parents present for an engaging and impactful session. Health awareness talks were delivered on proper ear hygiene, prevention of ear infections, and recognizing early signs of hearing loss that may affect a child’s speech, academic performance, and overall development. Free hearing screenings were conducted for the pupils, enabling early identification of possible hearing challenges. Children diagnosed with minor ear conditions received treatment on-site, while those who required further specialist care were referred for comprehensive evaluation and management. The outreach recorded strong participation and engagement from the school community, highlighting the need to prioritize hearing health within our homes and schools. Appreciation goes to the Odionwere of Iyowa Community, the staff and pupils of Iyowa Primary School, and the parents present for their warm reception, cooperation, and active participation, which greatly contributed to the success of the outreach. As we approach the official commemoration of World Hearing Day 2026, this activity reflects UBTH’s continued commitment to community-based preventive care and to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to hear, learn, and thrive. Today, the Department of Nursing Services, UBTH hosted a one-day capacity-building workshop on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Best Practices in Environmental Cleaning and Waste Management. The session which was delivered by the Chair, Infection Prevention and Control Committee, Dr Esohe Ogboghodo, aimed at strengthening institutional adherence to global IPC standards. Given the persistent challenge of high staff turnover and the continual onboarding of new personnel, periodic workshops are essential to sustain a culture of effective cleaning, disinfection, and waste management. Such efforts are essential in ensuring patient safety, reducing healthcare-associated infections, and maintaining the hospital’s commitment to quality service delivery. The workshop recorded an impressive attendance of over 300 participants.
