Admissions Inquiries
If you have any questions, please include the following information and send it to us via e-mail (admissions
grips.ac.jp).
・your name
・program you want to apply
・details of your inquiry
You can hear the voices of our students from
here
(GRIPS YouTube channel).
1.Q: Can I apply to two programs in one academic year?
A: No. You may not under any circumstances apply for more than one GRIPS program (including external applications such as YLP and MEP) in one academic year.
2.Q: Is there an age limit for applying to GRIPS?
A: If you want to apply for a scholarship allocated through GRIPS (e.g., MEXT, ADB, WB, WCO), you must satisfy certain requirements—including age limits—imposed by the scholarship providers. (See
Scholarship Eligibility and Details chart
for details.)
3.Q: For GRIPS Ph.D. programs and some Master's programs, applicants are required to fill in information about their proposed supervisor. How can I find a suitable research supervisor?
A: Begin by reading faculty profiles in the
Faculty Directory
. Once you have found a supervisor of interest, you should read some of the research papers written by that faculty member in order to acquire more detailed information about their research. A closer match between your interests and those of your faculty member of interest can improve your chances of acceptance.
Note: your choice of supervisor is taken into consideration during the screening process, but applicants are not always assigned to their requested supervisor.
4.Q: I would like to be supervised by a certain professor at GRIPS. Do I need to contact that person before I apply to GRIPS?
A: No. You are not required to have prior contact with our professors. We will allocate a supervisor to you after you begin your study at GRIPS.
5.Q: I am a master’s student and I am currently writing a thesis. Can I apply to a Ph. D. program?
A: Yes. If you are currently a student, you can submit the thesis you have been working on even if it is incomplete. If you think it is not enough, you can also submit a term paper or some other paper related to your research. If your program does not require a thesis, you can submit a paper that you wrote during your study and that is related to your area of research.
6.Q: Can I reuse supporting documents that I submitted in a previous year when I apply to GRIPS again?
A: No. Any supporting documents you submitted previously cannot be used for application in a subsequent year.
7.Q: Could you tell me about the screening criteria?
A: Selection for admission is based on an evaluation of the information and supporting documents that you submit.
Note: we do not respond to any individual inquiries about reasons for non-acceptance.
For information about target students, screening methods and the standards of each program, please refer to the
Admission Policy
of your program of interest.
8.Q: What class format does GRIPS use?
A: Our courses are generally conducted face-to-face.
9.Q: Could you tell me about class times and the academic calendar?
A: Please refer to Academic Information on the
Education
web page. In order to ensure that we provide the required number of class sessions, some classes will be held on some Japanese national holidays. The schedule of classes, including make-up classes, will be announced separately by the course instructors.
10.Q: My English test scores are below the required/priority scores indicated in the Application Guide. Can I still apply to GRIPS programs?
A: Regarding the Ph.D. Programs, applicants whose scores are below the required level will not be considered. For the Master’s programs, you may apply to our programs if you meet other requirements. However, please note that admission priority will be given to those applicants whose English scores meet the priority level indicated in our guide. For the details of the requirements, including application for a waiver of the English language proficiency requirement, please refer to our
Application Guide
.
11.Q: Can I visit the campus?
A: Visitors are welcome to visit our campus during our office hours, weekdays 10:00–12:00 and 13:00–16:00 (aside from national holidays). If you wish to visit our campus, please contact us (admissions
grips.ac.jp) by e-mail.
