Natural hazards data and models
Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake funds or co-funds major sources of natural hazards data for New Zealand and models that provide inputs for decision making.
GeoNet
New Zealand Geotechnical Database
GeoNet provides access to near real-time data and over 50TB of data archives related to monitoring natural hazards, such as earthquakes, tsunami, landslides and volcanoes. This data is used for research into understanding natural hazards and their impacts. NHC Toka Tū Ake was a founding funder in 2001 and remains the largest contributor providing approximately $14 million each year for the programme. We also fund or co-fund other key national tools such as the New Zealand Geotechnical Database, National Seismic Hazard Model along with NHC Toka Tū Ake’s PRUE, used by NHC Toka Tū Ake and reinsurers to assess natural hazard impact and financial exposure.
