Clubs & Organizations - The Gunston School
Clubs & Organizations
With students at the center of every program, Gunston actively seeks to train young people to be good citizens and to be leaders in their society. Leadership is a skill that can be taught, and students at Gunston have the opportunity to work closely with adult mentors who will help them develop and direct personally meaningful activities both in and outside their school. The network of young leaders blossoms in a nourishing environment that encourages students to fully engage in their passions, and classmates recognize and celebrate the contributions of each of their peers. Below are several of the opportunities available at Gunston, giving everyone a chance for visibility and support as they try on leadership roles in our community:

Environmental Club
G.S.A. - Gender Spectrum Alliance
Math Club
S.T.A.R.S. - Students Together in Astronomy Research & Studies
ACADEMIC TEAM
The Gunston Academic Team aims to promote general academic and cultural knowledge through a competitive quiz-bowl style format. Practices will be held weekly, and students will compete with other
schools throughout the year. All are welcome!
The environmental club is a space to learn about, inform others about, and explore the world surrounding us. We aim to encourage sustainability on our campus and throughout our everyday lives. We build a community that fosters leadership centered around our dedication to protecting the environment. The environmental club will have one targeted task and one task only– to be decided by the membership of the club. Throughout the year the group is also involved in planning outings (things like hikes and camping trips) as well as planning and coordinating the annual Earth Day celebrations. So if you are up for making a difference, come out for the Environmental Club.
The Gunston Gender Spectrum Alliance is committed to promoting a welcome and inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ students and allies at Gunston. The GSA has three core values: action, support, and community-building. Students will spend club periods discussing current events, planning advocacy-based programs, and educating the larger Gunston community about LGBTQ+ issues. All students are welcome to join, and you do not need to be LGBTQ+ to participate.
The Math Club’s objectives are to be inclusive and connected, to promote mathematical skills, prepare for exams, and to share ideas. Activities may involve mathematical applications, modeling, competition, and multidisciplinary problem-solving. Another focus is to discuss challenges, share presentations, review publications and inventions, and become involved in mathematical societies. All upper level math students are encouraged to participate in order to prepare for exams and future classes.
The objective of this group will be to give the Gunston community an opportunity to learn and get engaged with all things astronomy and space. Meetings will be student driven – specific topics to be chosen by the interests of the members – with the aim of being accessible even for those with little to no background knowledge in space. We also plan to keep the Gunston community informed on space news, such as meteor showers, rocket launches, anniversaries of significant events, and perhaps even witnessing supernovae and the like.

Chess Club
Film & Screenwriting
Mock Trial
Science and Engineering
Ambassadors for Belonging and Community, inspired by the NAIS Student Diversity Leadership Conference, promotes belonging and community at Gunston. ABC is devoted to recognizing and celebrating Gunston’s diversity of identities and beliefs. In addition to advocating for equity and inclusion on campus, ABC plans Gunston’s Civic Learning Day and plans to implement student-led discussions during Gunston Experience classes. ABC endeavors to create a safe space for dialogue on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Active members of ABC will have the opportunity to attend various conferences throughout the school year and be an intricate part of the school belonging and community events.
In Art Club, students will be able to delve into art mediums we usually don’t investigate in class, such as jewelry making, comic art, print making etc. We will be involved in keeping Gunston’s hallways up to date with student artwork, promoting art events and competitions, and continuing to cultivate our incredibly creative community. Art Club strives to give artists the space to pursue their passions and ideas, if you have an interest in art of any kind, this is the place for you!
Do you dream of being the next grandmaster? Maybe you just binged The Queen’s Gambit, and all of a sudden, you find yourself wanting to learn what the queen’s gambit actually is. Yeah? Great! But, it doesn’t matter if you’re a chess prodigy, a chess newbie, or somewhere in between; if you’re interested in chess then Gunston’s Chess Club is for you. Established as a welcoming space for anyone at any skill level to learn the fundamentals of chess and to develop more advanced skills, we will also work together as a team to solve complex chess puzzles, to compete recreationally and competitively, and to discover how the game of chess can help us learn something about life and ourselves along the way.
The Film and Screenwriting Club hopes to encourage the discussion and learning of art through moving images. More specifically, the primary focus would surround movies and television. The objective is to gain a better understanding of a different element of film every month. Members of this club are often involved in collaborative group projects as well as after school movie nights.
Gunston's Mock Trial Team aims to build students' rhetorical skills, research abilities, and public speaking confidence. Mock Trial is a perfect opportunity for any student who is interested in the American judicial/legal system. It is also an outlet for students who may possess, or would like to practice, their dramatic talents. The Team will work its way through a single criminal or civil case which is maintained by the Maryland Youth and the Law (MYLAW) and which is released to all participating Maryland schools. Competitions between area schools are held on school days in the afternoon/ evenings, December through March, with the most successful teams advancing to the Mock Trial State Championship held each year in April.
Participates in near space balloon missions, FTC (First Tech Challenge) robotics competition, and ARC (The American Rocketry Challenge). We will also participate in activities such as rocket launches sponsored by the Maryland Delaware Rocketry Association, field trips, and other exciting science-related events.

This club aims to generate and raise awareness of current health topics, including disease prevention, healthy habits, and life-saving strategies. During each club meeting, the participants will watch a video or presentation, followed by open discussion. Depending on the topic for the week/month, we will have interactive time where students will have an opportunity to engage in hands-on work together. All participants are welcome to bring topics of interest that they feel would benefit the club and community.
G.I.V.E. works toward school support of at least three charitable causes each year; one charity that is local, one that is national, and one that is international. The organizations supported are voted on by the members of the club. Another goal of G.I.V.E. is to find volunteer opportunities in the local community and invite all students to participate.
The Gunston Technology Club exists to allow students an opportunity to explore innovative technologies outside the bounds of normal academic offerings.  Club members will complement the Science & Engineering program such that Computer Science, Robotics and the Physics programs coexist as a means to allow maximum exposure for students to thrive in hands-on computing, programming and robotics avenues.

Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the UN General Assembly, UN Security Council, or other multilateral bodies, which catapults students into the world of diplomacy and negotiation. Students step into the shoes of ambassadors of UN member states, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe to debate current issues on the Organization's vast agenda. As “delegates, students prepare draft resolutions, plot strategy, negotiate with supporters and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the UN's rules of procedure-all in the interest of mobilizing "international cooperation" to resolve problems that affect almost every country on Earth. Students prepare by researching the particular global problems to be addressed. Model UNers learn how the international community acts on its concerns about peace and security, human rights, the environment, food and hunger, economic development, globalization, etc.
This club invites students with a passion for photography and a love for visual storytelling to join us. Whether it's capturing the beauty of our campus, the candid moments in the hallways, or the spirit of our sporting events, this club is always ready to snap the perfect shot. Members will work on their technical skills and develop a unique artistic vision. With each click of the shutter, The Gunston School Photography Club not only preserves memories but also fosters a sense of camaraderie and artistic expression among its members, as well as contributing images for our school Yearbook.
The purpose of this club is to spread awareness and acceptance about mental health challenges, such as depression and anxiety, and provide a safe, confidential environment for students to talk or decompress. Students engage in a variety of activities to learn about and practice healthy habits. In addition, the club organizes and leads schoolwide activities for Unity Day in October and Mental Health Awareness Month in May.
