Outbreaks You Never Heard About: Because CDC Was There
Disease detectives preparing to investigate an outbreak in the field
Some of the world’s most dangerous disease outbreaks never make the headlines—and you may never hear about them at all. That’s often because CDC and its global health security and technical experts are on the frontlines—working with countries to quickly detect, respond to and contain outbreaks.
One outbreak. One delay. That's all it takes for a local crisis to become a global threat. From cholera to monkeypox, Marburg to measles, these real-world stories with measurable results show how CDC stops global health threats before they spread, protecting Americans’ health, safety, and livelihoods. This is what American-led global health security looks like. Keeping Americans safe is our #1 goal.

Early Detection of a Deadly Threat
In 2023, a CDC-trained local health worker in Tanzania detected Marburg early.
In 2023, Tanzania faced its first-ever outbreak of Marburg virus—a deadly disease with a high fatality rate. A CDC-trained health worker detected the virus early and alerted authorities, helping to launch containment efforts that prevented any cross-border spread—moving the situation from crisis to control and, ultimately, protecting Americans.

Containing Ebola Before It Crossed Borders
In 2025, CDC-trained experts helped contain Ebola in Uganda before it could cross borders.
When Ebola surfaced in Uganda in 2025, CDC and local global health security and subject matter experts moved quickly to help contain it before it spread. Their coordinated actions not only stopped regional spread but also reduced the risk to the United States, demonstrating our leadership in global health security and why CDC experts are often the first call when threats emerge.

Stopping a Deadly Zoonotic Outbreak in a Tourist Hotspot
In 2025, CDC experts and local partners contain a potentially deadly outbreak.
In 2025, a dangerous outbreak of a pig-borne bacteria began spreading in Hue, Vietnam—just as millions of tourists arrived for peak travel season. CDC experts worked alongside local partners to respond swiftly and contain the threat— safeguarding U.S. travelers and preventing the disease from following them home.

Turning the Tide on Ebola in DRC
CDC experts in DRC helped detect Ebola faster and stop its spread.
In 2018, an Ebola outbreak in DRC went undetected for months and claimed thousands of lives. By 2022, CDC and partners had strengthened detection and response systems, enabling far faster outbreak detection and control. Today, thanks to those systems, the Ministry of Health and CDC quickly detected the most recent outbreak and built on this foundation to stop it in its tracks.
