National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ)

The NPLQ covers all elements of Pool Rescue Techniques, Lifeguarding Theory, First Aid and CPR. The course is physically
demanding and will include swimming to set times, lifting casualties and diving to the deepest part of the swimming pool. Training and assessment for the NPLQ are in three sections, and candidates must successfully pass all to attain the qualification.

Monday 20th July to Friday 24th July 2026
Course Prerequisites
Candidates must be
16 years
of age prior to assessment.
Complete a minimum of 36 contact hours of theory and practical training prior to assessment.
Complete exercises in “The Lifeguard” manual.
Jump/dive into deep water.
Be able to swim 50m in no more than 60 seconds at the start of the course.
Swim 100m continuously on front and back.
In deep water, tread water for 30 seconds.
Surface dive to the floor in the deepest part of the pool (it may be appropriate to seek medical advice with regard to reaching the bottom of the pool which is greater than 1.5m).
Climb out unaided without ladder/steps and where the pool design permits.
Frequently Ask Questions
Candidates should wear comfortable clothing such as tracksuit bottoms & polo shirts or T-shirt.
All candidates should bring a packed lunch and refillable water bottle.
All Jewellery should be removed.
Please remember to bring your swimming costume, a towel, a spare pair of shorts and a t-shirt (for use in the pool session).
Goggles can be worn during training but are not permitted to be worn on the final assessment.
For the dry side work candidates will need a pen and paper, the course book will be given out on the first day of the course.
The NPLQ course will be held at Alleyn's School. Venue information will be sent 48 hours prior to the start of the course.
We strongly encourage all visitors to consider how they travel to our site, and to choose active travel or public transport wherever possible.
Roads around Alleyn's are subject to a range of traffic and parking control measures including timed restrictions, so please pay careful attention to road signage and directions. In particular:
The junction on Townley Road and East Dulwich Grove is not available to cars in certain directions
between 8:00am to 9:00am
and
3:00pm to 4:30pm.
Southwark Council manages two different Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs) covering roads around the Senior and Junior School entrances. These areas are regularly patrolled by traffic wardens.
