YOUTH FRIENDLY RESOURCE CENTRE
Motto:
complementing in restoring the dignity of Man
The Youth Friendly Resource Centre (YFRC), Nigeria Nsukka was set up to help the university students use their extracurricular time constructively to facilitate a wholesome living within the university and when they graduate.
Stated below are the vision, mission, objectives, motto and strategy of the Center.
VISION:
Youths/Students of UNN emerging as self-directed, health-conscious, socially responsible, responsive and relevant citizens in our contemporary society
Mission: Empowering successive generations of desiring university youths/students to participate in the prevention of ill-health, promotion and sustenance of activities geared towards productive living, decent human conduct, and good leadership qualities
Objectives:
1) To set up a standard Youth Friendly Resource Center (YFRC) that will help in achieving the vision
2)To build the capacity of YFRC staff to provide quality youth friendly services
3) To provide trainings on leadership, healthy lifestyles, conflict resolution and violence prevention
4) To increase awareness on HIV/AIDS prevention, other related and relevant infections and diseases, provide HCT & Referrals, and collaborate with other stakeholders on the provision of care and support
5)To provide trainings on entrepreneurship skills, income generating activities (IGA) and resource mobilization
6)To promote in-and out- door games, life-transforming competitions, community services and volunteerism
7)To establish linkages and networks within the university, and with external organizations, both nationally and internationally
Strategy:
Concurrent empowerment of the Head, Heart & Hands
2015/2016 THEME:
CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT & SECURITY: TOGETHER, WE ARE THE SOLUTION
Aim:
To help students become part of the solutions to challenges in UNN
Create safe and supportive environment
Objectives:
To create the consciousness among students that they can make a difference
To help at least 40% YFRC registered members develop problem solving skills
To train the YFRC staff, Student Union Government (SUG) members and Hall Governors on security issues and information networking
To stimulate idea creations and entrepreneurship skills among (YFRC) registered members through Special Day Events and Competitions
YFRC with the above stated theme is working to create the consciousness among the university students that they are sent to school/university to know how to solve problems. They ought to begin to consciously prepare themselves to be relevant as well as gain influence over their everyday lives, thus be in position to realize their dreams. Our contemporary society is not looking for university graduates but people who can meet needs – problem solvers; people who can add value to lives. Our economic world today is looking for people who see themselves as partners in development, who find opportunity in every challenge to take action where others might find only despair. For any student/undergraduate to be the relevant man or woman, the individual must therefore be a person that provides solutions and presents a credible (marketable) personality. The person must possess the essential attitude, skills and knowledge (ASK), have the capacity for reinvention. Chance, they say, favors the prepared person. Certainly, those who prepare now while in the university will find themselves in the commanding heights of society and a place of influence in life.
YFRC in order to achieve her vision is systematically engaging desiring university students (registered or intending members of the center) in activities that enhance their confidence, connectedness, competence, character and contributions (usefulness) to society.
We help them realize that they have the talents and tools to make the broader society of which they are an integral part, a better community for all . We are achieving this through our 4Hs (head, heart, hands & health) strategy. We are methodically engaging them in gathering, analyzing, inferring and proffering solutions to some of the problems confronting their lives in and outside the campus environment. We activate their critical thinking ability (using the ‘Why, Why, Why approach) as we jointly work on getting the solutions and implementing them. Yes, most times, ability needs responsibility to reveal and expose itself.
What YFRC, UNN has envisioned, is to facilitate a holistic development of university students taking advantage of the university environment. YFRC wants to mobilize, engage, enlighten; awaken their conscience, re-orient, train and involve the desiring students in development processes, which will surely help them respond effectively and efficiently to life challenges without compromising (not gullible and vulnerable). We want to instill the sense of diligence (dignity of labour), good citizenship and humanitarian services, complementing the SURE-P (GIS) program.
There is no better time for it than now that graduates with the attributes and value traits of innovation, creativity, determination and self-confidence are in high demand.
There is no doubt that these students, by engaging them in recreational, entrepreneurship and vocational activities will certainly become Agents of change and active participants in the development of a socially inclusive and economically empowering society tomorrow.
Definitely, we don’t have it all together, but altogether, we have it all. We therefore seek the support of all stakeholders, private, local and international partners to help us achieve this laudible objectives.
