Your lecturers are here to help you with your studies, so if you have any issues with your modules or coursework requirements, please speak to your module tutor(s). They'll be able to clarify what’s required and make suggestions to help you.
The University has support processes relating to extensions and exceptional circumstances, which are designed to help you if you encounter issues that may impact you being able to submit or undertake an assessment on time.
If you don’t feel that you’re fit to submit or undertake an assessment, or if you feel that you need more time in order to submit an assessment item (or more than one assessment item), you can either:
i) Request a short extension from your module tutor (usually one week but can be longer than this at the tutor’s discretion) by submitting an
Extension Request Form (PDF)
to your module tutor;
or
ii) Request exceptional circumstances for assessments in one or more modules - this will defer the coursework hand-in date to the next assessment period. You can find out more about this process and our Exceptional Circumstances policy on the
Exceptional Circumstances webpages
. This tells you about eligible exceptional circumstances, possible evidence which may be required and the approval process.
As part of your studies, it’s important for you to know that the University operates a
Fit to Sit/Submit principle
as part of our Exceptional Circumstances policy. This is based on the principle that when you submit an assessment or sit an examination, you’re declaring that you’re fit to do so. Students should not then claim at a later date that their performance in an assessment or examination was affected by exceptional circumstances.
It is really important that you ask for support and let your module tutor know if you don’t feel that you’re fit to submit or undertake an assessment.
If you feel that there was either an administrative error in the assessment process, that the assessment of your course was not carried out as published in the course material or that there was demonstrable prejudice or bias against you by one or more examiners, you are able to submit an appeal.
If you wish to submit a formal appeal (known as a Stage One: Formal Appeal) following the receipt of your official University results, the Appeals team can support you through this process. Detailed information regarding the Appeals policy is available on the following pages:
