Get Involved!
Give back to your community while reconnecting with Laurel alumnae of all ages!
The annual
Sarah Lyman Day of Community Service
is a multi-city service event at which Laurel alumnae convene for a volunteer project held each fall.
For our 15th Sarah Lyman Day, we will collaborate with nonprofit organizations in
Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus, DC and New York City.
All projects require

BOSTON - Household Goods / Saturday, October 11, 2025 / 8:45 am - Noon
Household Goods is a nonprofit organization that provides a full range of new and donated household items and furniture, free of charge, to people in need to make a home. Volunteers will help sort, organize, move small items and make sure items are stable and clean. Volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes. There will be a mandatory 15-minute training (from 8:45 - 9:00 am) before the volunteer shift begins.

CHICAGO - Cradles to Crayons / Saturday, October 4, 2025 / 10:00 am - Noon
Join fellow alums at Cradles to Crayons' Giving Factory warehouse and assist in processing and packaging donations of new and nearly new children's items and essentials for distribution to local disadvantaged children. We will have donuts at 9:30 am at Cradles to Crayons and then after our volunteer shift the camaraderie will continue (everyone pays for their own lunch) at Coalfire Pizza, 3707 N Southport Ave, Chicago, IL 60613

CLEVELAND - Two In-Person Projects / Saturday, October 4, 2025 / 11:00 am - 2:00 pm for Youth Challenge at Butler and 2:00 - 4:00 pm at McGregor Senior Living
This year we are offering two in-person opportunities for local alums and their families to volunteer and support Sarah Lyman Day.
#1 We will host an activity day with
Youth Challenge
at our Butler Campus from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm. Youth Challenge provides free adapted sports and recreational activities to young people with physical disabilities and their teen volunteer partners. Volunteers will assist with running adaptive sports games and with arts and crafts projects.
#2 We will host an afternoon of fun games and activities with the residents of
McGregor Senior Living
from 2:00 - 4:00 pm. We will be in the Community Room. Anyone over age 5 is welcome to participate.

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Kids Book Bank Drive / September 28 - October 10, 2025
Live locally but can't join us to volunteer in person? We are hosting a book drive for the
Cleveland Kids Book Bank.
The mission of the Cleveland Kids’ Book Bank is to foster literacy and a love of reading by distributing free books to children through collaboration with community partners. Drop off new or good-quality, used children's books at Laurel's Lyman Campus between September 28 and October 10. Books for early childhood through 3rd grade are especially needed.

We will help support the various stations inside the Market, scanning groceries at the check-out stand, repackaging groceries into boxes after scanning, as well as helping deliver groceries to customer vehicles. Please wear weather-appropriate clothing. If there's a chance of rain, bring jackets and rainboots with you. Must be age 13 and up to participate.

NEW YORK CITY - Washington Square Park Community Clean Up / Saturday, October 11, 2025 / 9:30 -11:30 am
Spend a Saturday morning giving back to the Park you love!
We will weed, rake leaves, mulch, plant and do whatever is necessary to keep Washington Square Park clean, safe and beautiful. Please wear long pants, sturdy shoes, and gloves and bring a filled water bottle. Participants must be at least 14 years of age. Anyone between 14 and 18 needs a guardian to sign the waiver.

Be a volunteer and help celebrate National Public Lands Day at the only national park site devoted to cultivated water-loving plants!
We will participate in a variety of park stewardship activities including invasive plant removal, litter collection, flower bed weeding, trail maintenance and more. Some activities involve working in shallow ponds (wear rain boots!). This event will happen rain or shine so please dress accordingly and plan to be outside. All ages, friends and family are welcome.
