Student Funding
The Center for Latin American Studies offers several scholarships, assistantships, and fellowships for students studying at the University of Florida. A field research grant competition, summer foreign language fellowships, and internship opportunities are also supported. Even though most of the Center’s financial assistance is for graduate students, we do provide some opportunities for undergraduate students. We encourage you to look through the various financial opportunities offered below.
FLAS Academic Year Fellowships
Through support from the U.S. Department of Education, the Center for Latin American Studies offers Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Academic Year Fellowships to support training in Brazilian Portuguese and Haitian Creole.

FLAS Summer Fellowships
FLAS Summer Fellowships support participation in an intensive study program of a less-commonly-taught Latin American language (i.e., Brazilian Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Maya, Quechua, etc.). The fellowship covers the majority of program-related fees.

MALAS Graduate Assistantships
The Center for Latin American Studies awards a limited number of Graduate Assistantships to students in the M.A. program in Latin American Studies. Typically, an assistantship is assigned for both Fall and Spring semesters. The assistantship provides a stipend of $15,000 total for the two semesters and covers the cost of 9 graduate credits of tuition per semester and GatorGradCare.

Field Research Grants
The Center for Latin American Studies (LAS) sponsors a Field Research Grant Competition to support graduate student research in Latin America and the Caribbean. Research in the United States on a Latino Studies topic and research in Spain or Portugal on some aspect of Latin America are also supported.

TCD Fellowships and Assistantships
The Tropical Conservation and Development (TCD) Program announces a competition for Graduate Fellowships and Assistantships to support Master's and Doctoral level study in various disciplines. Awards cover tuition and provide a $17,000 stipend for one academic year of study at UF, usually matched by a second year of support from the student's department. The TCD Program offers an extensive range of classroom and field opportunities for students committed to an interdisciplinary understanding of biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource use, and human well-being issues in the tropics. Undergraduate Research
Undergraduate students enrolled in the Latin American Studies Minor or Certificate can opt for research immersion opportunities and are eligible for paid research. Alongside the Center for Undergraduate Research, there are two options to apply to: the Emerging Scholars Program (for freshmen and sophomores only) and the University Scholars Program.

Brazil Out-of-State Tuition Exemption Program – FBLI
The Florida-Brazil Linkage Institute (FBLI) awards tuition exemptions for qualified Brazilian undergraduate students studying at Florida’s public community colleges or Brazilian graduate students studying at Florida’s public universities.
