Head of Department, Chemical Sciences
History
The Department of Chemical Sciences holds a significant position as one of the pioneering departments at Joseph Ayo Babalola University. Established in October 2006, it has been committed to providing a comprehensive education in chemical sciences for students seeking careers in industry, research, and academia. Initially, the department offered three programmes: Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, and Biochemistry.
At its inception, the department consisted of seven academic staff members and two technologists, with the late Professor J.F. Ojo serving as the pioneer Head of the Department from 2006 to 2008. He was succeeded by Professor M.O. Oladimeji (2009 – 2010), Professor C.O. Fakunle (2011 – 2020), and Dr A.O. Oyebanji (Acting Head of the Department from 2020 – 2023). The current coordinator, Dr Adebola I. Akinjokun, assumed the position in August 2023.
The department’s first matriculation ceremony, held on February 22 2007, marked the enrolment of twenty-six students. However, following the National Universities Commission (NUC) reaccreditation exercise in November 2022, the Biochemistry programme was separated to establish a distinct Department of Biochemistry. Consequently, the Department of Chemical Sciences now focuses on offering the Industrial Chemistry undergraduate programme.
In addition to its undergraduate offerings, the Department also administers Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) and Master of Science (MSc) programmes in Industrial Chemistry, contributing significantly to the academic and professional development of students at the postgraduate level.
Moreover, the department plays a crucial role in providing basic science knowledge and service courses to students in other science-based departments within the university. This underscores its commitment to advancing JABU’s mission of providing practical and entrepreneurial education, particularly in the field of chemical sciences and research in Nigeria.
Philosophy
The Industrial Chemistry programme is rooted in the belief that a strong scientific foundation combined with practical industrial applications is essential for the development of innovative solutions to real-world challenges. The department is committed to fostering a learning environment that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and a multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving. It emphasises the importance of sustainable practices, ethical responsibility, and lifelong learning to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to excel in the ever-evolving chemical and industrial sectors. The programme is designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, ensuring that graduates are proficient in the scientific principles of chemistry and can apply these principles in industrial processes to improve quality of life and contribute to societal development.
Vision
Our goal is to establish a leading institution for delivering top-quality education, conducting groundbreaking research, and driving advancement in industrial chemistry education, research, and innovation. The programme of the department aims to develop highly competent graduates with a strong chemical science foundation and advanced industrial skills. The department seeks to produce professionals capable of addressing contemporary challenges in energy, materials science, pharmaceuticals, and environmental management through cutting-edge research, industry partnerships, and a focus on sustainable practices. Graduates will be equipped with the problem-solving abilities, ethical values, and leadership skills necessary to drive technological advancements and foster sustainable industrial growth, contributing meaningfully to societal development and global sustainability efforts.
