Federal Automation Community of Practice The Federal Automation Community of Practice, or CoP, empowers federal agencies to harness the full potential of automation technologies, from Robotic Process Automation, or RPA, and scripting to AI-powered solutions and beyond. With over 1,700 members representing more than 100 departments and agencies, we serve as the federal government’s premier hub for automation expertise and collaboration. Our members understand the unique complexities of federal operations, from procurement and compliance requirements to security protocols and policy constraints. This shared experience makes our community uniquely qualified to help each other navigate the distinct challenges of implementing automation within the federal government framework. Our publications We publish several major publications, available exclusively to Federal Automation COP members. State of Federal Automation Report The annual State of Federal Automation Report assesses the maturity and impact of automation programs across the federal government, identifies federal automation trends, and highlights best practices for future deployment. The latest report, published in 2025, showed growth in automations, and how federal teams have used them with a targeted focus on agency mission delivery and improving citizen service. Federal Automation Use Case Inventory We publish the Federal Automation Use Case Inventory every fall. The inventory has a lot of useful information for federal automation program managers to get ideas for automations, like function, software, cost and time savings, operations and maintenance , and more. In 2025, we collected more than 3,000 use cases! RPA Playbook Our RPA Playbook and Internal Controls Addendum give federal agencies a detailed primer for initiating a new RPA initiative, as well as clear guidance for how to evolve existing programs to achieve increased performance and maturity. As RPA was new to us, the monthly talks hosted by the CoP and presentations from other federal agencies have been excellent learning opportunities. The annual reports have provided significant insights, but the RPA Playbook published by the team proved most valuable for scaling our program. It demonstrated effective ways to capture user value, justify funding, improve customer service, and collect feedback.
