At Hackley, leadership isn’t just about holding a title — it’s about discovering one’s passion, developing new skills and giving back to the community.
Beyond the classroom, our students explore and commit to causes that inspire them, gaining invaluable insights into themselves while challenging their character, perspectives and leadership abilities.
Student Government
Hackley’s student government, the Community Council, empowers students to inspire and unify the school community. Upper School students elect their peers to serve in various leadership roles, each aimed at fostering collaboration and communication between students, teachers and administrators. The Council is dedicated to creating an accepting and respectful environment, while strengthening school spirit through meaningful relationships and extracurricular activities. Their mission statement reflects this commitment:
“We hope to achieve a high level of honor, respect, commitment and communication, which will make us into a family and leave a legacy that will inspire future students at Hackley.”
Student Clubs
Student clubs at Hackley play a vital role in enriching the educational experience, offering opportunities for students to explore their interests, develop leadership and organizational skills, and collaborate beyond the classroom. These student-led clubs unite individuals with shared passions, foster mutual support and embody Hackley’s core values, especially, “
United, we help one another

Driving Change Through Service, Sustainability and Advocacy
From environmental sustainability to social responsibility, our students take action in meaningful ways. For example, the
Hackley Lake Keepers
work alongside the Tarrytown Environmental Advisory Council to protect local waterways;
Intraspectrum
partners with Project Ready to raise awareness for autism; the
Hackley Earth Action League
promotes sustainable practices on campus; and the
Soup Kitchen Club
provides meals to those in need, embodying Hackley’s spirit of compassion and giving back. These clubs, among many others, serve as platforms for Hackley students to engage with and serve their communities.
Student Leadership in Community Engagement and Service-Learning
Hackley’s commitment to service runs deep, with students actively engaged in community-driven initiatives that extend far beyond volunteerism. Through our Community Engagement program, students learn the power of collaboration, working hand-in-hand with local organizations to make a meaningful impact. These projects provide real-world learning experiences and foster the development of leadership, empathy and social responsibility.
While Hackley does not impose a mandatory community service requirement, students consistently volunteer and contribute to various initiatives with a sense of purpose and pride. This spirit of service begins in the Lower School and grows throughout their Hackley journey. Whether it’s participating in the Upper School Midnight Run to deliver sandwiches to those in need or leading a new service project in Upper School, Hackley students are always looking for ways to make a difference.
What is Service-Learning?
Service-learning is an educational approach that combines community service with structured opportunities for reflection and academic learning. Unlike volunteerism or community service, which focus primarily on giving time and support to others, service-learning is purposefully integrated with the curriculum, allowing students to apply academic knowledge to real-world issues. This reflective practice encourages students to think critically and assess their experiences, the impact of their contributions and the ways they can affect positive change. Through service-learning, Hackley students develop leadership skills that empower them to take initiative, think strategically and work collaboratively. These experiences not only help them grow as compassionate, thoughtful individuals but also prepare them to lead and create lasting impact in their future academic and professional pursuits.
Student Leadership in Mentoring and Peer Tutoring
Hackley students are leaders both in and out of the classroom. They play a crucial role in peer tutoring, helping fellow students achieve their academic goals and fostering a supportive learning environment for all. In addition, many Upper School students serve as mentors through our Hudson Scholars program, offering guidance and support to younger students from neighboring schools. These leadership opportunities help build confidence, empathy and collaboration skills — qualities that will serve our students well throughout their lives.
