A high-quality business degree should be structured to teach you the skills needed to be competitive in the workforce. Core concepts include financial reporting, ethical decision making, organizational communication,
leadership
, and principles of management. Students can also align their program with their career goals by specializing in a certain area.
Find a business program that fits your career goals.
Choosing an emphasis area when pursuing your Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) can be beneficial if you’re looking to specialize your business studies. It allows you to develop deeper, targeted knowledge and understanding of a specific area of business that is then transferable to the job market. In addition, having an emphasis provides employers with insight into the type of work you are seeking and how your skills apply to their business.
As an example, if you choose a finance emphasis in your UMass Global BBA, you will take a total of four finance courses (12 credit hours). This will hone your skills related to financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and other topics highly sought after by employers in the banking and investment industries. This will allow you to specify your goals when creating your resume or interviewing for a job.
However, if you’d rather have a broader understanding of multiple areas of business, it could make sense to not choose an emphasis, instead taking four courses across the business school. Electives can provide you with exposure to diverse topics and ideas, which can then help you when making decisions in your future career.
