Postgraduate Studies
All applicants with non-South African School-leaving require a certificate of exemption from the Matriculation Board of South Africa for admission into an undergraduate qualification. The University of Fort Hare will also submit applications to the Matriculation Board on behalf of the applicant on submission of the following:
Form M30E (also available from the matriculation board website) Copies of educational qualification (certified at the University)
Copy of Passport or birth certificate (certified at the University)
Exemption application fee charged at R400.00 (payable at the University)
Sworn English translation of documents required where applicable.

All applications for study visas need to be submitted at the South African embassy or consulate for your country of origin. You cannot apply for a new study visa /change of visa within South Africa’s borders.
Immigration Documents
The following documents are required for a study visa:
An original letter of acceptance from the university
A valid passport
Proof of comprehensive medical insurance
Proof of accommodation
A Radiology Report not older than 6 months
A medical report not older than 6 months
Police clearance certificate issued by the police.
Proof affordability of fees (letter by guardian /parent undertaking to support the student, bank statement indicating affordability and copy of passport or identity document). Or a scholarship or sponsorship letter by organisation or University.

The Centre for Leadership Ethics in Africa (CLEA) is an interdisciplinary research hub at the University of Fort Hare, dedicated to advancing knowledge on African Leadership through research, postgraduate supervision, and collaborative dialogue. CLEA supervises students across disciplines such as Politics, Philosophy, Theology, and History, focusing on African Political Theory, Liberation Heritage, Governance, and Sovereignty. Do I need a study permit to enrol at UFH?
Yes, all international students are required to have a valid study permit before registration. You must apply for your permit at a South African Embassy or High Commission in your country of origin.
How do I renew my study permit?
To renew your study permit, you must submit an application at least 30 days before its expiry. You’ll need to provide the following:
A valid passport
Completed BI-1739 form
Proof of financial means and medical coverage
Police clearance, medical, and radiological reports
Proof of accommodation and an official letter confirming registration
The UFH Office for International Affairs can assist with this process.
What additional documentation is required for postgraduate studies?
Postgraduate students must provide original academic transcripts for all previous registrations. Documents not in English must be translated and sworn by an authorized translator.
What academic support services are available?
The Learning Advancement Unit offers:
Supplemental Instruction (SI)
Language and Writing Advancement Programme (LWAP)
Peer Assisted Student Services (PASS)
These programs are designed to enhance student academic performance and promote collaborative learning.
What is the National Benchmark Test (NBT)?
All international students are required to write the NBT for Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) prior to admission. Registration for the test is mandatory via the NBT website, and fees range from R60 to R110 depending on the test.
Do I need an English language qualification?
Yes, international students must meet minimum English proficiency standards, such as:
TOEFL: Minimum score of 560
IELTS: Minimum score of 6.0 (no component below 5.5)
What are the tuition fees for international students?
Tuition fees are categorized as follows:
SADC students: Same fees as South African students
Non-SADC African students: Fees include government subsidy replacement
Non-African students: Fees include subsidy replacement plus 50%
An international levy of R1500 (SADC) or R3500 (non-SADC) is also applicable.
What accommodation options are available?
The University provides on-campus residences, or students can find private accommodations in nearby areas.
What health and safety services are available?
UFH offers protection services and operates its own Health Centre at affordable rates. Public health facilities and police services are also accessible in the surrounding communities.
Are there recreational and counselling services?
Yes, UFH offers a variety of sporting activities, professional student counselling services, and facilities for spiritual support, ensuring a well-rounded student experience.
