The RNC holds its police officers to the highest standard. All complaints of officer misconduct and criminal allegations are taken very seriously.
Through legislated processes, and independent civilian oversight by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Public Complaints Commission and the Serious Incident Response Team of Newfoundland and Labrador (SIRT-NL), members of the RNC are held accountable for their actions. Officer complaint and disciplinary processes are outlined in the
RNC Act
.
Complaints Process
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Public Complaints Commission (RNCPCC)
provides members of the public with an independent forum for complaints against Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officers. A complaint must be made in writing and may be lodged in person or online with the
RNCPCC directly
, or at any
RNC detachment
.
The Serious Incident Response Team of Newfoundland and Labrador (SIRT-NL)
is a civilian-led police oversight agency responsible for conducting independent investigations into serious incidents involving death, serious injury, sexual offence, domestic violence or any matter of significant public interest that may have arisen from the actions of a police officer in the province. Pursuant to S. 11 of the
Serious Incident Response Team Act
, chief officers must notify SIRT-NL as soon as practicable when a serious incident may have taken place. SIRT-NL can also receive notifications from the Minister of Justice and Public Safety or a member of the public.
