Completing the FAFSA Verification While the academic record of a student is important for admission, to the college, and for certain scholarships, most financial aid is awarded primarily on the basis of financial need. Financial need is determined by comparing the amount a student and their family can provide toward their college education with the actual cost of attending Livingstone College. The purpose of financial aid is to award students within the guidelines of federal, state, and institutional aid programs. Tuition and fees are due and payable as a part of the student’s registration. The need for financial assistance should be anticipated and all arrangements for aid should be made with the Office of Financial Aid prior to registration. 1.) Apply for admission to Livingstone College by completing the Admission application online and forward requested credentials to the Office of Admissions. 2.) Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. It is important that you fully complete the FAFSA as soon as possible. Please be sure to indicate that you would like to attend Livingstone College on your FAFSA Application using our School Code. 3.) While filling out the FAFSA, you are encouraged to provide your consent to allow the IRS to populate the applicable income fields on the FAFSA with data from your federal tax return. If you chose not to participate in this process, you will be required to obtain a Federal Tax Return Transcript from the IRS and send a signed copy to our office. 4.) Complete all other required financial aid forms and return them to Livingstone College Office of Financial Aid. 5.) When the Office of Financial Aid receives your Student Aid Report, we will then process your award(s), mail your award letter, and submit all award information via https://campusweb.livingstone.edu/ics. 6.) We will also notify you in writing of any additional changes made to your financial aid award package. Livingstone College Title IV School Code: 002942 Verification is a process in which a FAFSA is selected for review by the Department of Education or the Office of Financial Aid at Livingstone College. If your FAFSA is selected for verification, the Office of Financial Aid will notify you and request signed copies of yours and your parent(s) Federal Tax Return Transcripts or with W-2 forms or with other financial documents and compare information from your FAFSA with the submitted documents. If there are differences between your FAFSA and your actual financial documents, Livingstone College Office of Financial Aid may need to make corrections electronically. Disclosure The financial aid awards listed in your award letter are subject to change at any time based upon the availability of funds and any updated information provided to or received by the Office of Financial Aid, including notification of additional aid granted to you.  There are many reasons why you may become ineligible for funds.  Some of these factors include, but are not limited to: Your total award package including outside assistance exceeds your “cost of attendance” (the estimated total of tuition, fees, room, board, books, supplies, transportation, and personal expenses for the award period, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid) Changes in enrollment status (from full-time to part-time or other status changes) Receipt of other aid Withdrawal from classes Failure to comply with College immunization requirements Changes in reported financial status THE FEDERAL PELL GRANT The Federal Pell Grant Program awards grants to eligible undergraduate students as determined by a formula used by the Department of Education. An undergraduate student is defined as one who has not received a bachelor’s degree or a professional degree in any area. Graduate students are ineligible for this grant. THE FEDERAL SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY GRANT (SEOG) The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant Program awards grants to eligible undergraduate students. Awards are dependent on the availability of funds. Graduate students are ineligible for this type of grant. THE FEDERAL COLLEGE WORK STUDY PROGRAM (FCWS) Provides students with part-time employment on campus. In order to be eligible for work study, the following guidelines are applicable to all students: 1) must be enrolled at Livingstone College 2) must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States 3) must be capable of doing acceptable work All students awarded Federal Work-Study as part of their financial aid package will be required to have a Federal Work-Study Referral/Authorization Form on file. Students who have been awarded Federal Work-Study will be assigned a position through the Office of Financial Aid. The student must report to the Office of Financial Aid to receive the Referral/Authorization Form. The form indicates the department the student is assigned, the supervisor’s name, the year of the work assignment and the rate of pay along with the student’s earnings limit. A student should not begin work until the completed Referral/Authorization Form is on file in the Office of Financial Aid. THE FEDERAL DIRECT STAFFORD LOAN PROGRAM A Federal Direct Stafford Loan (subsidized and unsubsidized) is a low interest loan made to students. Stafford loans are available to graduate and undergraduate students. At least half-time attendance (6 credit hours per semester) is required in order to be eligible. Subsidized loans are awarded to students on the basis of financial need. The federal government pays the borrower’s accrued interest during certain periods, such as when the student is in school, thereby “subsidizing” these loans. An unsubsidized loan is not awarded on the basis of need. You’ll be charged interest from the time the loan is disbursed until it is paid in full. If you allow the interest to accumulate while you are in school or during other periods of nonpayment, it will be capitalized-that is, the interest will be added to the principal amount of your loan and additional interest will be based upon the higher amount. Before you borrow, please remember that loans must be repaid. Consider carefully how much you will need to borrow and the burden your loans will impose after you leave school. THE FEDERAL DIRECT PARENT LOAN FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS (PLUS) Federal PLUS loan is a low interest loan program for parents of eligible dependent undergraduate students. The amount parents may borrow is the Cost of Attendance (COA) minus any other aid (grants, scholarships, loans and work-study) the student will receive for the academic year. Parent must begin repaying both principal and interest within sixty days after the loan is disbursed. DECLARING A MAJOR As of March 25th, 2013, all students will have to declare a degree in order to receive Federal Title IV funds. IRS DATA RETRIEVAL TOOL When you complete your 2019-2020 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) be sure to use the new IRS data retrieval tool. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool allows you to use your completed tax return to automatically complete portions of the FAFSA. It’s easy, it reduces errors and makes the entire application process easier. MAXIMUM LIFETIME PELL ELIGIBILITY As of July 1, 2012, all Pell grant recipients are subject to a lifetime maximum of 12 semesters or its equivalent. The new regulation is based on 12 semesters or 6 years. For example, a student who attends full-time for a full year would have received 2 semesters or 1 year of his overall Pell eligibility. The calculation of the duration of a student’s eligibility will include all years and terms the student received the Federal Pell Grant.
