Alleyn’s School
Careers and Higher Education
Career describes our journey through life, learning and work.
Careers
We need to actively develop our careers to make the best of them. This process of career development takes skill as well as knowledge and the right attitude. Individuals need to work on career development skills throughout their lives.
Career Development Institute (CDI)
At Alleyn’s, we place great emphasis around building excitement about Careers through these three steps:
Career curiosity in the Lower School
Career exploration (and career curiosity) in the Middle School
Career decision-making (alongside career curiosity and exploration) in the Upper School
These stages help to prepare pupils for life after Alleyn’s, to enable them to make well-informed decisions as they embark on next steps towards university and/or apprenticeships, having started to actively consider what is important to them in their bigger picture of life and work in the future.
Alleyn’s pupils are supported as they reflect on their strengths and skills; explore jobs of the future; gain insights about different ways of working such as employment, freelancing and entrepreneurship, build relationships (networking); learn goal setting techniques; undertake work experience; break through stereotypes; learn about personal branding and how positive the purposeful use of social media can be in career development. They will also write CVs; practice interviews; get clear information on multiple routes towards their career goals (including the recognition of portfolio careers) and understand more about how economy, politics and society connect with their own lives and careers.
All pupils at Alleyn’s have access to Unifrog, a universal destinations platform (it is introduced to Year 7s in the summer term) and further information about the careers programme will be published here shortly.
The careers department has been my go to place for university, work experience and career support. It's where I always find valuable advice and have always felt hugely supported. They have been invaluable through my journey for the past few years and the tips and wisdom never fail to amaze and motivate me!
Romy, Year 13 (2021-2022)
The careers provision in PSHE for Year 11 has been really useful and have given a lot of pupils more of a sense of direction, tempered by a reminder to keep an open mind for a wide breadth of career options. This is supplemented by talks and interviews with a wide range of people who are seasoned professionals in their area, and hearing their personal experiences has been extremely helpful.

Higher education
Each year, the vast majority of our students progress to their first-choice courses at UK and overseas universities or other specialist centres of learning.
Through offering advice and support, information and offering mock exams and interviews we prepare students for life beyond Alleyn’s.
Advice and support
We have a dedicated Higher Education Co-ordinator supporting the team of teachers who provide advice and support on the application process, led by the Director of University Admissions.
Informed decisions
We organise an annual Higher Education Fair for Year 12 students and their parents from Alleyn’s and our partner schools where, this year, over 30 representatives from universities visited us. We also organise specialist talks on applying to Oxford and Cambridge, applying overseas, applying for medicine, or for a degree apprenticeship.
Preparation
Through our Careers Centre, located in the heart of the School, we organise mock interviews for our sixth formers with leading industry professionals as well as workshops on the importance of body language at interview, emotional intelligence and the role of social media in today’s job market.
Our aim is that every student is encouraged to apply for the path that best suits them. For example, aside from UK universities, every year students successfully gain places on prestigious music and drama courses or Foundation Art programmes or choose to study overseas (in Canada and the USA).
