Families with babies and young children
No. 1 Royal Crescent aims to be welcoming and inclusive to everyone visiting the museum, including parents or guardians visiting with babies and young children.
Unfortunately prams and buggies cannot be taken through the house due to the historic nature of the building and its contents.
Breastfeeding and bottle feeding is allowed anywhere where there is visitor seating within the museum. Should parents require more privacy, please ask a member of staff on arrival who will be happy to assist in finding a quiet spot.
Baby changing facilities are available, however these are not on the visitor route so please ask for assistance and a member of staff will guide you to the facilities.
A family trail is also available for children.

Accessing No.1 Royal Crescent
Digital all-areas tour
Visitors who are unable to access the Tower itself can explore the collection through our new accessible digital binoculars tour in the Tower Vault, a step-free space.
Physical access
Flooring
No. 1 Royal Crescent is an historic building. Some of the floors are uneven. The flooring in the Basement and the Courtyard is flagstones. The Back Stairs are very steep and narrow. Outside the Gentleman’s Retreat there is glass flooring to showcase an original staircase below, this is on the main route but can be avoided by walking back through the Parlour to the Grand Staircase.
Step free access
The Museum is divided into two areas, No. 1 Royal Crescent (the historic house) and 1a, the domestic wing next door. There are two routes around the museum, one of which is step free.
The step free route gives access to the ground and basement floors of the main house museum and the ground and first floors of the domestic wing. This route gives step free access, via an accessible lift, to following museum spaces:
the Dining room
the Parlour
the Gentleman’s Retreat
the Housekeeper’s Room
the Servants’ Hall
the circulatory spaces, both above and below stairs
the Shop
the Andrew Brownsword Gallery (temporary exhibitions and holiday activities are regularly held here).
Unfortunately it does mean missing 4 rooms of the museum:
the Kitchen
the Gentleman’s Bedroom
the Ladies Bedroom
the Withdrawing Room
Multimedia Guides
A virtual iPad tour of these rooms is available to borrow from the ticket desk, when borrowing this, we will ask you to provide a credit card for security.

Sensitive Material
The ‘Georgians at Home’ experience features stories relating to the Transatlantic Slave Trade as the source of much of the wealth in Georgian Bath. This content is told within the context of the 18th century narrative rather than from our contemporary viewpoint today, so some people visiting the museum may find this upsetting. Staff will support anyone wanting to pause their visit.
If you have any questions or concerns ahead of your visit, please contact our friendly team at No. 1 Royal Crescent on 01225 428126 or email
[email protected]
