National Service Scheme (NSS):
ABOUT NSS :-
Davangere University Was Established On 18
th
August 2009 By Being Carved Out Of Kuvempu University With A Purpose And Vision To Meet The Educational Aspirations Of The People Of This Region. The University Has 121 Colleges Affiliated To It With One Constituent College And Autonomous College Offering Graduate And Post-Graduate Programmes In Various Disciplines Catering To The Educational Needs Of More Than 50,000 Students National service Scheme (NSS) was established in University in the year 2010. The main motto of NSS is
“not me but you”.
Education through community and community service through education is the goal of NSS. The thrust area of NSS include:- adult literacy and environmental protection related programmes. University NSS wing has 102 units comprising 10000 students volunteers in the 71 colleges in the University jurisdiction. Department of youth services, Government of Karnataka has been providing grants for conducting regular activities and special social camps.
VISION OBJECTIVES MISSION
National Service Scheme (NSS) The vision is to build the youth with the mind and spirit to serve the society and work for the social uplift of the down-trodden masses of our nation as a movement.

The Main Objectives Of National Service Scheme (NSS) Are :
Understand The Community In Which They Work
Understand Themselves In Relation To Their Community
Identify The Needs And Problems Of The Community And Involve Them In Problem- Solving
Develop Among Themselves A Sense Of Social And Civic Responsibility
Utilise Their Knowledge In Finding Practical Solutions To Individual And Community Problems
Develop Competence Required For Group-Living And Sharing Of Responsibilities
Gain skills in mobilising community participation
Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
Practise national integration and social harmony
MOTTO:
The Motto Of NSS “Not Me But You”, Reflects The Essence Of Democratic Living And Upholds The Need For Self-Less Service. NSS Helps The Students Develop Appreciation To Other Person’s Point Of View And Also Show Consideration To ‘/Other Living Beings. The Philosophy Of The NSS Is Well Doctrine In This Motto, Which Underlines/On The Belief That The Welfare .Of An Individual Is Ultimately Dependent On The Welfare Of The Society On The Whole And Therefore, The NSS Volunteers Shall Strive For The Well-Being Of The Society.
SYMBOL:
The Symbol For The NSS Has Been Based On The Giant Rath Wheel Of The World Famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) Situated In Orissa, India. The Wheel Portrays The Cycle Of Creation, Preservation And Release And Signifies The Movement In Life Across Time And Space, The Symbol Thus Stands For Continuity As Well As Change And Implies The Continuous Striving Of NSS For Social Change.
BADGE:
The Nss Symbol Is Embossed On The Badge. The Eight Bars In The Wheel Represent The 24 Hours Of A Day. The Red Colour Indicates That The Volunteer Is Full Of Young Blood That Is Lively, Active, Energetic And Full Of High Spirit. The Navy Blue Colour Indicates The Cosmos Of Which The Nss Is Tiny Part, Ready To Contribute Its Share For The Welfare Of The Mankind.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND :-
The First Education Commission 1950 Recommended The Introduction Of “National Service” By Students On A Voluntary Basis. Subsequently, On The Basis Of Suggestion Made By The Prime Minister Pandit Nehru, A Committee Was Appointed Under The Chairmanship Of CD Deshmukh To Prepare A Scheme For Compulsory National Service By Students Prior To Their Admission For Degree Courses. Prof K.G.Saiyidain Who Undertook A Study Of National Service By Youth In Several Countries, Recommended That National Service May Be Introduced On A Voluntary Basis. In The April 1967, The Conference Of State Education Ministers Recommended That At The University Stage.
The Conference Of Vice-Chancellors (Vcs) In Sept 1967 Welcomed This Recommendations And Suggested That A Special Committee Of Vcs Should Be Setup To Examine This Question In The Details. In Pursuance Of These Recommendations, The Ministry Of Education Introduced The NSS During 1969-70
The Choice Of The Timing To Its Introduction Was Remarkably Suspicious As 1969 Was The Birth Centenary Year Mahatma Gandhi, The Father Of Nation To Whom Social Service Was Almost A Religion. The Response Of Students To The Scheme Has Been Excellent Starting With A Strength Of 40,000 In 1969, Now It Has Reached 30,00,000 In The Country.

The Symbol Of The NSS, As Appearing On The Cover Is Based On The “ Rath Wheel Of The Konark Sun Temple Of Orissa. The Wheel Signifies The Progressive Cycle Of Life. It Stands For Continuity As Well As Change And Implies On The Part Of The NSS For Continuous Striving For Social Transformation And Up Liftmen.
