In a world that increasingly values innovation, empathy, and the ability to thrive amid uncertainty, the arts ignite possibility. They inspire students to see the world differently, to imagine what doesn’t yet exist, and to lead with curiosity and compassion. Our Visual & Performing Arts offerings include Beginning-through-Advanced courses in the areas of Dance Music Theater and Visual & Media Arts . Each discipline invites students to engage deeply in creative practice, whether they’re new to an art form or pursuing it with passion and discipline. Through the arts, our students practice independent thinking, effective collaboration, and develop confidence—skills they carry with them into every classroom, every team, and every leadership role at SAAS and beyond. In our arts classrooms, every act of creation is also an act of discovery, where imagination leads to deeper understanding. Making art becomes a way for students to make sense of the world and of their own place within it. Whether composing a score, choreographing movement, designing digitally, or performing in an ensemble, students learn to: Solve open-ended problems with creativity and flexible thinking Collaborate in dynamic ensembles that require responsiveness and trust Express ideas through visual, physical, and musical forms Build resilience through practice, iteration, and performance Develop their own voice even as they learn to listen carefully to others Explore our breadth of Visual and Performing Arts courses below. Middle School Original creation–whether performing onstage in an ensemble or by creating in a studio space and being challenged with new visual arts media–involves expanding one’s thinking and taking risks outside one’s comfort zone. Teachers create appropriate avenues of challenge for students based on the arts discipline and/or by building on a student’s skills and previous knowledge. Seattle Academy Middle School has a broad selection of arts course offerings, and below we have outlined Middle School arts courses by grade. All arts courses listed are one trimester except for Band, which is a yearlong course. The 6th grade arts curriculum is an introduction to arts offerings at SAAS. Students will take courses in Dance, Visual Arts, and Vocal Music throughout the year. Students also have the opportunity to take Band as a yearlong class, and if a student chooses the yearlong Band class, they must then choose between taking the other arts courses for their grade (Dance, Visual Arts, and Vocal Music) or taking PE (instead of other arts classes). All 7th grade students select three single trimester courses from options in Dance, Visual Arts, Theater, and Music. Students are able to select from different courses in the Theater and Music categories. Students who take the yearlong Band class choose between taking the other 7th grade arts options or taking PE (instead of the other arts classes.) All 8th grade students have the opportunity to take a trimester of Visual Arts, Music, and Theater. Students are able to select from different courses in the Music and Theater categories, and the Visual Arts class introduces digital mediums. Students who take the yearlong Band class choose between taking the other 8th grade arts options or taking PE (instead of the other arts classes.) MIDDLE SCHOOL CURRICULUM GUIDE Upper School Original creation–whether performing onstage in an ensemble or by creating in a studio space and being challenged with new visual arts media–involves expanding one’s thinking and taking risks outside one’s comfort zone. Teachers create appropriate avenues of challenge for students based on the arts discipline and/or by building on a student’s skills and previous knowledge. Artistic endeavors require the development and integration of the following four complex skills and processes. The first is engagement. In this phase, students become acclimated to the creative environment and begin to recognize and exercise their natural creativity. Second is the development of vocabulary and technical skills. Vocabulary supports the student in dialogue with artists, peers, and teachers and begins to shape a worldview in which the arts are an integrated element, while the development of technical skills allows students to excel in artistic expression. Third is performance and exhibition. Students must be able not only to apply the skills that are required but also to integrate these skills into the creative process.  Fourth and last is evaluation and reflection on both the product and the process. Students must have the critical skills both to assess their own individual development and provide constructive feedback to peers. Each of the arts disciplines–Visual, Dance, Theater, and Music–has a "portfolio or audition track" for students who want to make a more focused commitment to skill and repertoire/portfolio development through practice and study in their art form.
