Giving
Every gift makes an impact on the Thomas Heyward Academy community.
In 1970, our founding families selflessly provided their time, abilities and resources to establish and sustain Thomas Heyward Academy. Today, the generosity of our alumni, parents, grandparents and friends continues to be essential as we elevate programs, enhance campus life, and build new facilities. As a 501 (3) nonprofit organization, Thomas Heyward Academy is dependent on charitable gifts from our school community and beyond.
All contributions, whether to The Annual Fund, Spring Gala or an endowed gift, directly impacts the student experience. All gifts are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law, and all donors will receive a letter of recognition once donation is processed.
Every gift is important to THA and greatly appreciated.
Giving At-A-Glance
You may be surprised to learn that tuition does not cover the full price of educating a Thomas Heyward student. As a result, Thomas Heyward (along with all Independent Schools nationwide) raise philanthropic dollars to help cover the remaining costs. The array of funding requests can be overwhelming to parents, who can seldom support every initiative.

Endowments at independent schools generally consist of large, single contributions that are collectively invested. Subsequent return on investment can be used to fund financial aid, faculty positions, and improvements in buildings and grounds, among other items.
Thomas Heyward Academy’s endowment is managed by an international financial services company. The Head of School provides a monthly report to the Board of Directors describing the performance of invested funds.
Those interested in making tax-deductible donations to the endowment are most welcome to do so. We invite them to contact any member of the Board of Directors or the Head of School to discuss a donation.
Thomas Heyward accepts pledge commitments for The Annual Fund, capital campaigns and other school fundraising initiatives. Pledges to the Annual Fund must be paid in full by June 30th of each year. Capital pledges are typically paid over a five-year period.
Corporations are permitted by law to give away to qualified charitable organizations up to 10 percent of their pre-tax profits in any given fiscal year. This provision offers a double tax savings, in that neither the corporation nor the individual is taxed on the gift.
Taking advantage of the IRA charitable rollover is a tax-smart way to make a gift to THA if you are 70 1/2 or older. You may transfer any amount (maximum of $100,000 per year) from your retirement account to THA. This type of gift allows you to satisfy some or all of your RMD (required minimum distribution), while avoiding it otherwise being counted as taxable-income. If you are interested in this gift, you must consult a tax advisor in order to ensure legal/tax requirements have been satisfied. You should also consult with your CPA and Financial Advisor to decide if a QCD is right for you.
Many companies offer programs that will match employee donations - some will double or triple your contribution! To find out if your company has a matching gift program, contact your company’s human resources department. If your company offers this program, we are happy to provide assistance in securing the match.
If you have included THA as a beneficiary of your will, trust, retirement account or life insurance policy, we want to know so that we can ensure your gift is executed how you envision it. If you simply want to learn more about planned giving and leaving a legacy at THA, we encourage you to reach out to us.
