Prophecies and lunisolar calendars in the Commedia ·
Canto xxvii of Paradiso has always been an exegetical challenge for Dante’s critics. Opening with Saint Peter’s invective against the popes who corrupted the Church, the canto ends with the announcement of a renewal of the world, against the backdrop of arcane features of the Julian calendar. Making use of Bacon’s Opus Majus, it is argued here that the key the unlocks the multiple enigmas in the text is hidden precisely in the calendar, and in particular in the Easter computus.

Listina Jindřicha I. Ptáčníka DH I 20: Moderní kritika a problematika tzv. Hausordnungu [The Charter of Henry I the Fowler DH I 20: Modern Critique and the Problem of the So-Called Hausordnung]

The designation of king Otto I by king Henry I is associated with the legal-historical concept known as the Hausordnung. This concept is based, among other things, on the interpretation of Henry I's charter, commonly referred to as DH I 20. The following article analyses this key source and the scholarly discourse connected with it. It is demonstrated that even if DH I 20 is in fact a forged charter, the forgery still preserves a valuable historical core, since the formulation of the arenga was probably not the crucial element that motivated its creation. At the same time, the article argues that, in both scenarios, the charter cannot be regarded as a reflection of the so-called Hausordnung.
Designace krále Oty I. králem Jindřichem I. bývá spojována s právně-historickým konceptem tzv. Hausordnungu.

Regarding the topic I will discuss this evening, I would like to highlight the connection between Dante, Joachim, and Sambucina. Starting with the latter, and without dwelling too much on its history, about which I have written extensively and presented several papers, I would like to emphasize that this ancient abbey, at the foot of the Sila, was a veritable hotbed of monks devoted to prayer and the observance of the Rule of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, becoming the center of Latin monasticism in the Norman kingdom. Initially founded by the Black Benedictine monks, it later became the first Cistercian abbey in the Norman kingdom in 1145; several monks subsequently separated from it, some of whom even became saints, and founded other abbeys to spread their Order. Their task was to Latinize these lands, making them faithful to the Church of Rome, which, at that time, had been ousted by the Byzantines with the introduction of Greek-rite monasticism.

This contribution examines the reception of guests in Benedictine houses in Western Europe, with particular attention to the Italian context between the sixth and the fourteenth centuries. It opens with a detailed analysis of the Regula Benedicti, focusing on its prescriptions concerning hospitality and guest reception. The study then considers the customary and constitutional regulations of several Benedictine reforms that emerged and spread in Italy during the High and Late Middle Ages—namely the Cistercians, the Camaldolese, the Vallombrosans, and the Olivetans. The aim is to show how the written norms supplementing the Rule interpreted its precepts on the reception of non-professed individuals in light of differing historical, cultural, and ecclesiological contexts. Particular emphasis is placed on the evolutionary process that developed from the thirteenth century onwards, a process that was not unaffected by the influence of the new mendicant orders.

ABSTRACT;
Chapter 64 of the Rule of St. Benedict stresses that the abbot should be elected unanimously or, if not possible, by a minority (sanior pars) of the monastic community rather than by a numerical majority. This study aims to demonstrate that this electoral procedure may derive from a 546 Justinian Novella. This is confirmed by a comparative reading of the texts and of the opinion on this point expressed in the modern age by the humanist jurist Antoine Le Conte (Contius). This allows us to affirm that the Rule could have been issued by Benedict after 546

This thesis examines the episcopal career of Walter, bishop of Orléans between 867 and 892, and argues that his significance lay not merely in local ecclesiastical administration but in his active role within the political structures of late Carolingian Francia. By combining institutional, political, and administrative analysis, the study determines the place of Walter in the ninth-century Western Frankish political life. By carefully analysing his capitulary, which was promulgated in the second year of his tenure, this thesis tries to determine his effects on the administrative structure of the church of Orléans and the points where he parted his ways with his predecessors in the means of governing the Diocese, which was under his control. The second part situates Walter within the political landscape of Neustria. It examines his close association with Hugh the Abbot and his subsequent support for Odo, the first non-Carolingian king of West Francia. Through charter evidence, narrative sources, and episcopal correspondence, the thesis shows that Walter functioned as a political broker, facilitating alliances, legitimizing power transitions, and contributing to the consolidation of royal authority in and around Orléans.

In the ancient world the term otium is used to indicate the time dedicated tointellectual and spiritual enrichment (its opposite is negotium). Beginning in Late antiquity, otium becomes an indispensable tool for the realization of the ideals of monastic life. The architectural type of the “cloister with galleries”, which established itself in the second half of the Eighth century in an exclusively quadrangular formulation, was inspired by the late antique architectural model of the peristyle, always present in domus and villae. This structure is then destined to assume a strongly identifying character for the monastic communities of the Christian West.

more
This article examines the first two books of the eleventh-century Liber miraculorum sancte Fidis of Bernard of Angers. Bernard wrote the miracles with specific theological concerns of northern cathedral schools in mind, concerns that centred on sight, presence, and the role of eyewitnesses. At the same time, however, the text also reflects the influence of the social norms of southern Frankish warriors practiced at the shrine, within the cult network, and with Sainte Foy's reliquary. For the devotees at Conques, Sainte Foy was the central patron. Treating Bernard's miracles as polyphonic texts written with different lay and clerical communities in mind makes it possible to criticise Bernard's imposed 'elite' and 'rustic' dichotomy within the miracles. It then becomes possible to demonstrate that elite lay people and their social practices can have an impact on intellectual and theological change in eleventh-century Francia.

This essay reflects on the potential of scholarly digital editions for medieval documents, using the acts of the notary Octavianus from the archive of Santa Maria della Grotta as a case study. Through Monasterium.net, XML/CEI encoding, and the analysis of digital images, the article shows that digital editing is not merely a form of publication, but also a research method. Encoding makes it possible to highlight textual structures, diplomatic forms, scribal features, and documentary dynamics that are otherwise less visible. The analysis of Octavianus’ charters reveals, within a local southern Italian context, the fluidity and hybridity of documentary forms between breve, charta, and scriptum memoriae. The study ultimately underscores the value of interoperability and markup as tools for a richer historical interpretation of medieval records.

The article examines the question of Roman urbanisation on the island of Cres during the early imperial period. It seeks to balance the markedly different levels of research conducted at Osor, Cres, and Beli, evaluating them impartially. This re-evaluation is based on the principle that considering inscriptions, architecture, and landscape context together provides a more comprehensive understanding of Roman urban development than treating these categories separately. Adopting this approach has improved understanding of the available archaeological evidence. At the same time, it has revealed that perceptions of the Roman towns on Cres are influenced more by the state of research than most scholars would admit. The contribution of archaeological prospection methods and the dating of historical mortar are also discussed. Due to the very different post-Roman historical trajectories and natural conditions at each site, a wide range of results has been observed. The findings confirm that Osor was the Roman centre of Cres and that the inscription CIL III 3148 (10131) most likely originates from there. The location of the potential Roman settlement of Crexi remains unknown. No evidence was found to support the existence of an early imperial town at Beli. Instead, the dating of the city wall mortar indicates a settlement phase in late Antiquity.

more
This chapter examines the entanglement of law, gender, and colonial power between the 1750s and 1950s, arguing that modern legal regimes were central to constructing and enforcing a hierarchical, patriarchal gender binary on a global scale. It situates this development within the expansion of Euro-American colonialism and racial capitalism, which deployed law as a key instrument for classifying human difference and institutionalising social hierarchies. The chapter traces how Enlightenment science and colonial governance converged to elevate an idealised figure of the white, male, propertied subject, embedding this norm within legal systems and marginalising alternative formations of gender, intimacy, and sociality.
Drawing on critical scholarship and case studies from British and French imperial contexts, the chapter highlights how colonial law actively suppressed gender diversity, both in metropolitan settings and across colonised societies. It explores the legal regulation of gender-nonconforming individuals, including South Asian hijṛē and West African artisanal castes, as well as the influence of Orientalist representations on Islamic legal and cultural discourses. At the same time, the chapter foregrounds forms of resistance, including early feminist and proto-transnational movements, which contested colonial gender regimes. It concludes that while colonial law entrenched gendered hierarchies, it also unwittingly generated the conditions for their eventual critique and transformation.

We would certainly have thought Aimé Giron had disappeared, but lo and behold, a young publisher in La Chaise-Dieu has unearthed him, taken him out of his tomb, at Rakuten, and is offering us his whimsical, though not so fantastical, tale of the adolescent love affairs of Jacques de Saint-Nectaire. Rather perverse, you might say! Yes, but realistically not lay-secular—or should we say crystal-clear Catholic?—at all, and medieval to boot with a skipping rope. And the whole thing is amusing because we never get to the bottom of the story, and the case is definitely frozen and closed. Even for Sherlock Holmes or some other Arsène Lupin. But the crafty, handmade book is quite a respectable object to collect in your library.

Mikuláše a sv. Kateřiny a spojené s rekonsekrací oltáře, odpovídá historické situaci, podobě stavby i možnému výkladu nápisu.

2. La legislazione giustinianea e il cap. LXIV della Regola di san Benedetto sulle
procedure di elezione dell’abate - 3. L’opinione del giurista umanista Antonie Le

Chapter LXIV of the Rule of st. This allows us to affirm that the Rule could have been issued by Benedict after 546.

more
In my paper, I will examine the role of church councils in granting special privileges to the monastic communities of late antique and early medieval Gaul.
My point of departure is the first monastic privilege of exemption widely regarded as genuine: the document issued by bishop Burgundofaro of Meaux for his newly-founded monastery at Rebais in 637. Significantly, Burgundofaro’s charter closely follows the form of synodal acts; it is composed as bishop’s address to six other bishops gathered in Meaux’s cathedral and appended are the signatures of twenty-six bishops. In further resemblance to council acts, the privilege of Rebais claims to repeat some earlier legislation, namely the special rights conferred at different times on four monasteries: Agaune, Luxueil, Lérins, and Saint-Marcel in Chalons-sur-Saône.
Contrary to my predecessors, I think that this list was not just “a fictive reconstruction of the past that served to embed the privilege in a venerable tradition” (Rosenwein 1999: 68). Nor was portraying the privilege as the council acts a purely stylistic or rhetorical choice. In my presentation, I will show how Burgundofaro’s charter was influenced by different church councils, particularly the so-called Council in the Case of Faustus (ca 451) and the Council of Valence (583). I will also employ hagiography and documents forged in later periods to reconstruct some more obscure church councils, such as the council which sanctioned Agaune’s monastery re-foundation in 515.
The purpose of my paper will be, thus, twofold. Firstly, I will demonstrate how the aforementioned councils influenced each other, presenting the privilege for Rebais as the result of a long evolution of monastic liberties rather than a sudden innovation. Secondly, I will explain why convening a church council was necessary to grant an exemption from the authority of the local bishop to a specific monastery.

In my paper, I will investigate the role of late antique Gallic monasteries as places where clerics learned how to properly perform their duties. This phenomenon is attested both for adults freshly ordained to priesthood (prince Merovechus sent to the monastery of Aninsola in 576) and children committed by their parents to follow ecclesiastical career (evidenced by Gregory of Tours for the monastery of Agaune). I will enquire into the skills clerics were taught in the monasteries and their role in the community. Finally, I will argue in what way the examples of secular clergy being educated in the monastic communities may alter our assumptions concerning late antique monks and, more generally, the relation between the monastic and clerical vocations in this period.

In my paper, I will discuss emotions presented in The Life of Saint Gerald of Aurillac. This extraordinary Vita was written by Odo, Saint himself and the second abbot of Cluny, and is renown as for being the first that depicts the sanctity not of a clergyman nor a member of a royal dynasty but that of a nobleman. In the first part of my presentation, I will briefly describe the rich emotional language of the Vita and instances where emotions play vital roles.
The second component of my paper will consist of working hypotheses concerning the origin of the various passions present in the Gerald’s Life. My foremost line of inquiry will be the works fundamental to emergence of monastic spirituality, mainly the Apophteghmata of the Desert Fathers and the writings of John Cassian, Augustine of Hippo, Benedict of Nursia and Gregory the Great, introducing and popularising Desert Fathers’ concept of monasticism in the West.
The third and final part of my delivery will be an attempt to uncover Odo’s reasons for employing such vast repertoire of affections in his work. Gerald’s Vita is indeed not easy to interpret – the reader is puzzled at first since Gerald’s actions and emotions particulary seem to contradict one another. I will argue that this is the result of the Saint’s “otherworldness”. For there is a clearly visible tension in Gerald’s attitude towards secular world. On the one hand, he is a great lord with plenty of subjects and corresponding number of worldly obligations. On the other hand, he wears a hidden tonsure and seeks peace in the inner solitude of his heart, where only Jesus’ love is present. In my opinion, this conflict is mirrored in Gerald’s emotional structure, which combines several traditions that I intend to trace.

Meeting the requirements of GDPR is one of the compliance obligations for all organizations that process personal data, and therefore also for all types of libraries. For this reason, the introduction of this chapter describes the general legal regulations for personal data processing in libraries – from the definition of basic concepts and main principles, through the lawfulness of processing, the fulfillment of information obligation, the rights of data subjects to special institutes of personal data protection from the perspective of libraries. Main part of the chapter describes a  procedure useful for the application of GDPR requirements in the practice of libraries, concluding with references supporting documents and information resources for the implementation and control of measures to comply with the conditions of personal data processing in libraries.
