Introduction

Brackett Field Airport is located in the City of La Verne, approximately 25 miles east of Downtown Los Angeles, with convenient access to the 210, I-10 and 57 Freeways, and lies adjacent to popular destinations including the Fairplex at Pomona, In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip, and Raging Waters Los Angeles. The airport facilitates more than 95,000 general aviation (GA) takeoffs and landings each year on its parallel runways.

Originally constructed in 1940, Brackett Field Airport has been owned and operated by LA County since 1969 and is publicly available to GA aircraft 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It sits on 276 acres and is home to more than 260 based aircraft, a restaurant, and numerous aviation-related businesses.

Several local organizations and agencies call Brackett Field Airport home, including the Mt. San Antonio College Aviation Department’s aircraft maintenance and pilot certificate programs, LA County Fire’s aerial unit, LA County Sheriff’s aero and metro units, and the City of Pomona Police Department.

Hangar and Tiedown Rental Information

Aircraft tiedowns and hangars of various sizes at the airport may be rented from Public Works on a month-to-month basis.

County-owned hangars are intended for the non-commercial storage of airworthy aircraft. However, consistent with Public Works’ Month-to-Month Leasing General Plan/Policy Regarding the Use of Aircraft Storage Hangars for Non- Aeronautical Purposes, County-owned hangars may be used for the non-aviation self-storage of personal property and household goods on a temporary basis only when aeronautical demand does not otherwise exist for the hangar(s). See Public Work’s Month-to-Month Leasing General Plan/Policy Regarding the Use of Aircraft Storage Hangars for Non-Aeronautical Purposes for more information (provide link).

Please contact the Airport Manger’s Office at (909) 593-1395 for more information about aircraft tiedowns or hangars available for rent at the airport or to be added to the hangar waiting list. Note that the hangar waiting list is for aircraft owners who are ready, willing, and able to rent a County-owned aircraft storage hangar, when available, for the storage of their airworthy aircraft.

Noise Abatement Program

LA County airports are surrounded by noise-sensitive residential and commercial areas. As such, each airport endeavors to be an asset, not a nuisance, to their respective local communities. In order to help mitigate potential negative impacts from aircraft operations and enhance compatibility with the surrounding communities, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works maintains a proactive noise-mitigation program with requested visual flight rules (VFR) flight paths, operational restrictions, and limited activities during certain hours of the day.

Pilots should be aware that LA County airports‘ neighbors—residents, business owners, visitors, and wildlife—are sensitive to aircraft noise. Airports’ staff ask that pilots follow these noise abatement procedures—only when practical and consistent with the safe operation of aircraft—to protect the quality of life for LA County community members:

  • Runway 26 arrivals: standard left-hand pattern.
  • Runway 8 arrivals: non-standard right-hand pattern.
  • No touch-and-go landings or pattern practice between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
  • Avoid noise-sensitive areas whenever possible.
  • 26L VFR departures: when speed and altitude permit, turn left 10 degrees at end of runway to remain over water until reaching west edge of reservoir.
  • 26R VFR departures: day-use only. Avoid homes along north shoreline. No turns before 57 Freeway.

Contact airport managers’ for more information.

Disclaimer: The above noise abatement procedures should only be used for flight planning. Pilots should read back and follow all Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) air traffic control instructions.

Brief History

In 1940, James Long and Kenneth Brooks—operators of the original Pomona Airport—leased 50 acres of land from the Base Line Water Company and plowed a 2,600-foot runway out of a wheat field. This landing area was named in honor of Dr. Frank Brackett, a distinguished Pomona College astronomer, mathematician, local historian, and author of History of Pomona Valley, California. The airfield formally opened as a Civil Aeronautics Administration approved airport on October 15, 1940. Over the following decades, the facility underwent significant modernization, including the paving of the primary runway and the construction of an FAA Air Traffic Control Tower in the late 1960s. The County of Los Angeles officially purchased the airport in 1959, and as regional demand grew, a second parallel paved runway was added in the 1980s. During this period, the airport expanded to approximately 270 acres, seeing the construction of numerous hangars and the establishment of various aviation businesses.

Brackett Field also holds a storied place in aviation history as a frequent participant in the All-Woman Transcontinental Air Race (AWTAR), popularly known as the “Powder Puff Derby”. Notably, the airport served as the official starting point for the inaugural 1947 race and was scheduled to host the start of the 1974 event before its cancellation due to the national fuel crisis. These historic races continued through 1977, cementing the airport’s legacy in pioneering women’s aviation.

Today, Brackett Field Airport remains a thriving general aviation hub, facilitating over 134,000 operations annually as of 2025. It is home to nearly 300 based aircraft, multiple flight training facilities, a Fixed Based Operator, aircraft maintenance facilities, airport supplies shop, a popular on-site restaurant, and a variety of public agencies, including the Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff Departments, Pomona Police Department, and Mt. San Antonio College’s aeronautical program. With a fully staffed daily-operating Control Tower, an Instrument Landing System (ILS), and an advanced Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS), the airport safely accommodates a diverse range of aircraft, from small single-engine propellers to high-capacity turbo-props and corporate jets.

Overall, Brackett Field plays a vital role in the nation’s integrated system of airports and serves as a premier asset to the City of La Verne, the Pomona Valley, and the broader County of Los Angeles.
